Squareneck Dobro Capos

Why use a capo on a squareneck Dobro?

1. Adds versatility...you'll be more prepared to play in a variety of keys.
2. Adds variety in overall tonality. You can change the tonality of a Dobro completely by utilizing a capo. It can enhance your Dobro by giving it an overall brighter sound.
3. Adds interest...when playing solo Dobro, many times the drone strings will make consecutive songs sound similar. By placing your capo up 2 frets on one song...then 4 frets on the following song, it can keep the drone strings sounding completely different. This keeps the appeal for both player and listener.
4. Increases your jamming presence. If you've learned a song in one key, utilizing lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs in the open position, you can play the same arrangement in most any other key by adding your capo. Many fiddlers for instance play mostly out of A; with a squareneck Dobro tuned to the standard G tuning, you only need to place your capo at the second fret to play open-position A tunes.

Dobro capos are far and few between. They are far less common than standard guitar capos. As far as roundneck dobros go, any standard guitar capo will fit one; whereas, on a squareneck Dobro, the capo is far more specialized in design. Following are some options to choose from that will work well on any squareneck Dobro.

Shubb Dobro Capo

This is a capo that should last you a lifetime...it's made of very heavy brass and allows you to change keys comfortably and fast without retuning. It is relatively heavy which contributes to a nice sustain and . It has a small tension screw that usually only has to be adjusted once. I've found that the Dobro stays in tune far more efficiently than it does when using most other squareneck capos.

Paul Beard Dobro Capo BC-23

For 6 & 8 string squareneck resophonics. this capo has a brass body, string muting pad and a unique bone leading edge for optimum clarity & tone. It's thumbscrew adjustable. 3.2 oz

Squareneck Dobro Picks

Metal fingerpicks (Dunlop) .
Thumbpick (Dunlop)

The traditional medium utilized with squareneck Dobro is 2 metal fingerpicks and 1 plastic thumbpick. We carry quite a variety of thumbpicks and metal fingerpicks. I personally found the Dunlop brand to fit far more comfortably than just about any other I've tried. Many times, I'll use all three finges and thumb instead of just thumb and 2 fingers. I usually only do this when playing solo Dobro since it increases my range similar to fingerstyle guitar...when playing bluegrass style Dobro, I'd recommend the traditional medium...since that's all that's really needed.
