I'll make it short and sweet... after much searching, I finally found the music store that offered that rare combo of a knowledgeable staff, quality merchandise, first class service, and great price... FOTW is it!! Mickey took the time to help me decide that the Trinity College offered all I needed in my transition from fiddle to octave mandolin. And I couldn't be happier! Now I can look forward to a fair market value trade-up to my next instrument, a Mid-Missouri Octave Mando (just keep leaning on Mike at Mid-Mo to finally start building them!).
Subject: Octave Mandolin Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 Hi there Folk of the Wood. I received my Trinity College Octave Mandolin. It is as beautiful looking and sounding as I expected. Thank you for such a wonderful instrument.Michael Cazares Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 Dear Folk of the Wood, The octave mandolin arrived fast, and in great shape. It has a beautiful voice, and the Shadow pick-up you installed is great! Thank you so much for all your help with it. Sincerely, Pat Gislason Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 Hi Mickey, The octave mando arrived Saturday in fine shape. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. Looks good, sounds good, and plays pretty well. Plays darn good, considering the price. I'll be having a good time with it for quite a while, I think. At least until it's time to move up to a Weber or a Jones. It's a keeper. And your cross-picking book is great - just the sort of thing I was looking for. Thanks, Mark Stayton Date: Sat, 27 Nov 1999 Mickey, Recieved the Octave Mandolin today via USPS. It arrived in good shape and is quite nice...thanks. I did not find the tuning fork or the strings in the box...I went through all the stuffing, but no avail. Not to worry, though. I'll be back in NC next week and wont need it. The strings I'll order soon. Thanks and look forward to doing business again in the future. It is a very interesting instrument with a lovely tone. I have figured out several of my favorite flatpicking fiddle tunes already. You have positive feedback from me on Ebay. I look forward to visiting your store next time I am in NM. I will be sure to keep an eye on your auctions on Ebay. At the bottom of this is a link to the bazouki luthier in Taos that I mentioned during our phone conversation. Thanks again..Kellar Winkelmeyer http://www.celticmusic.com Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 Mickey-- The octave mando is terrific. I'll be playing the viola part in the orchestra with it since that's it's range. I tuned it CGDA starting one octave below middle C and it sounds fine. I've already tried it out woith one of the groups and they love the sound so the octave was defintiely a great idea and it's a beautiful insturment--lokks and sound! The Ratliff has been getting great compliments as well. it's hard to know what to play first--Ratliff or Trinity! The tape is wonderful! Can't wait for my friends to hear it. Your book is terrific and just as difficult as you say it will be getting started but well worth the effort. Thanks so much for everything.
