My thoughts about Jerry:

"What can you say about such a legend as Jerry Douglas? He's THE Dobro Icon! The paragon of whom we all aspire. I've been listening to Jerry's playing ever since I can remember. My all-time favorite album ever recorded by an acoustic artist, and I believe I have too many to count, is written and performed by Jerry Douglas. The name of this album (I guess they call them CDs today) is "Under the Wire". I've probably listened to this particular CD a minimum of 5000 times. I mean I can play it all day, all week and all month repeatedly and never tire of the selections. Most every tune on "Under the Wire" evokes a certain mood that is not recreated by any other tune I've ever heard. I've learned so much from this singular work which includes, but not limited to: timing, articulation, phrasing, dynamics, texture, harmony and delicate composition...revealing, in a consciousness awakening, what can be accomplished on a squareneck Dobro. Between Jerry's design of the Gibson Signature Douglas Model, and Gibson's superb quality of construction, it's got to be the ulitimate Dobro of all time. I want one!" Mickey Cochran

A letter directly from the Gibson Factory:

Jerry was never completely satisfied with the "Douglas" models produced in
the past. Sadly they just didn't completely live up to his expert eye and
ear. However, after several meetings with Jerry and listening to what he
wanted to see and especially hear, we developed 8 different versions. Jerry
came in and played them all and we took the best one and refined it. The
removal of the standard soundwell opens up not only the full range of the
instrument, but allows more of the instrument (primarily the back) to really
"sing" because it's not all compressed and glued up.

The sound baffle not only adds a little needed support to the top of the
instrument, but prevents the "mids" from "building up" in the upper bout of
the instrument causing feedback when amplified. Because the soundring needs
a little support holding up the pressure of the cone, we placed 4 spruce
sound posts on the 4 load bearing legs of the spider, giving not only
support but resonance as well.

All of this along with string spacing specs from Jerry makes this a superior
quality instrument. I might add that recently we implemented a policy where
Jerry's eyes and ears inspect every single Douglas model that ships from our
facility. This makes the Jerry Douglas model Dobro a piece of Dobro history
inspired by an artist who personally approves every one of his signature
instruments.

I hope this answers your questions and helps you to better know your
instrument. Thank you for purchasing one of our Dobros.

( I then asked if Jerry inspected my Dobro - and gave them the serial
number - I also asked about the three sound holes being removed from my
model and their website)

That's one of the changes that Jerry has made. No more sound holes! Yes,
Jerry would have played and inspected your Dobro. It was finished on
7/26/01, and is the 7th Douglas model produced this year.

Testimonials:

Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001: Thank you all at Folk of the Wood for making the purchase of my new Gibson Jerry Douglas model Dobro such a great experience! You really made it special by enjoying the event along with me. From the original purchase of my Regal RD-45 to my trade up to the Gibson, you were there with me enjoying my journey to an awesome Dobro.

There was no opportunity for me to shop for a Dobro locally. It seems music stores only want to sell guitars and have no interest in offering folk and bluegrass instruments. From time to time I might see a mandolin or banjo hanging forgotten on some music shop's wall, but never a Dobro. Your Video Samplers and 100% guarantee gave me the confidence to purchase an instrument sight-unseen. I have no doubt that we will do business again.

As far as the Gibson Jerry Douglas Dobro......it is fantastic. It has a voice that is often more moving than the song I'm trying to play. Thanks again for being so cool. I'll stop by next time I'm in New Mexico!

Best regards, Marty
Marty Plays his new Jerry Douglas Dobro!

Greetings Marty,

All I can say is Wow! I love the look...nice mellow orange looking mahogany body... This is no doubt a Dobro I would keep a lifetime; it truly inspires me to start practicing dobro again. It most definitely has "that" JD sound...lots of sizzle yet unending warmth. As you probably are already aware, my all-time favorite album (CD now) is Jerry Douglas' "Under the Wire"...I mean this is a CD that I've listened to more than anything in my entire collection of recorded music...even as compared to my old Moody Blues' albums that I thoroughly wore out...

Ultimately, I'm going to order a JD model for my personal Dobro arsenal...I've just got to have one!!!

Just so you know, I photographed it and performed about 5 different video samplers on this dobro...no one else has touched it. It's shipping today 2-day air Fed Ex. Please stay tuned on the site within a day or so for the images and the video samplers to be loaded. Your JD has made history here at FOTW; the samplers and photos will be proudly displayed on our site.

Keep on Pickin', Mickey

Bryan, Mick..........

I finally found some time to record something with my new Gibson Jerry Douglas Dobro...........
I've only been playing Dobro since June when I first received my Regal RD - 45 from you. However
I have been playing banjo and guitar for years. Before I knew it, I had to have this Gibson.  MARTY

Mickey -
In reference to the Jerry Douglas Video Samplers:
Great pickin' and great sound from the JD Dobro - thanks for posting them! I must admit that it has a nice sizzle to it's sound without changing the setup. You are really making my Dobro experience fun for me. I look forward to sending
you my next music file, that's for sure!

I'll keep in touch and may be out in Albuquerque next year - I'll be sure to let you all
know and we'll come up to visit and hopefully pick a little with you.

Thanks for following up on the saddle for me - I'll be in touch soon.

Best regards to all = Marty
