October/November 2000 Testimonials
From Our Wood-Wise Following
Wow! Outstanding testimonials just arrived!
Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 Dear Mickey, The Rigel A+ Deluxe arrived safely on Tuesday just in time for the traditional Thanksgiving jam of old time music. I played it most of Wednesday evening getting comfortable with it. The tone is spectacular. I have two wonderful 1920's Washburns that I would stack up against any Gibson for sustain and brightness if not depth, but the surpasses anything I could have expected in an oval hole for tone, clarity and note separation, ease of playing, depth on open chords, volume, and all around wow-ness for fiddle tunes and celtic music--O'Carolan's Morgan Megan never sounded better. The classical pieces I've tried sound wonderful. I think I like the fact that the sustain isn't so long that it blurs the next note. In short, I'm delighted. It was the right decision to go for the Rigel. I don't have the technique yet to get the sound that Simon Mayor can get out of an f-hole. But this mandolin is extraordinarily sweet-toned and positively rings on a tune like Soldier's Joy or Liberty both of which I played about a hundred times since getting the Rigel. Thank god I live alone.
I want to thank for your advice and your care in updating me about the time of delivery. I received your voice-mail message with all the joy of an expectant father and to hear you make the Rigel sing for me over the phone was a delight. The whole process of consulting with you, working out the details, and finishing the transaction with you was a delight. As I said before, I've dealt with other concerns but yours is the finest top to bottom I've ever encountered in the instrument business. I doubt in fact that any other business has ever been so patient with my inquiries and in keeping me updated. All the thanks in the world goes to you and the gracious folk of the wood. I just put the Rigel down long enough to write this and now I'm going to pick it up again and teach myself "St. Anne's Reel"--the first chord of which sounds saintly already. Bless you Mickey. And thanks be to heaven for you and Folk of the Wood. Warmly, Jon
Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 Hi Mickey, What an incredulous web site. Where else in the world could a person find a site where he could hear and see the instruments of choice (mandolin being mine) without having to drive many, many miles to to play only a small choice of instruments. Sure enjoyed your mandolin playing and styling, you make the "so called" entry level mandolins sound like the cherished vintage instruments. I always heard that the musician had lots to do with the sound of an instrument. Now I believe it! Mickey would you mind telling me the type and thickness of the flat picks you use for your mandolin playing? I am always searching for the ideal pick. I also do a crude form of crosspicking that I picked up from Jesse Mc Reynolds many years ago. Best wishes and keep up the good work. Paul Harris
Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2000 Thinking about trying the mandolin. I've never even held one. I play guitar. Yours is the best music site I've ever seen. I've seen that you are quite good at helping folks select their instrument and answer questions, but your site answers alot of questions on it's own. Harry Brown
Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 Mickey I don't understand why anyone would purchase an instrument elsewhere if it can be bought at Folk of the Wood. I studied your site for some time before asking for prices on certain mandolins. I assumed that due to the Trade-Up and Trade-In policies, the prices would not be competitive, or at least on the high side. I was surprised and pleased that FOTW prices were very competitive and in most cases lower then the large discount mail order operations!I bought a Ky. 350 at a very good price, and you've offered me a very reasonable trade-in price on my present mandolin. I still have the opportunity to move up to a Rigel A-Plus with no risk of loss of value if I later trade the Ky. for the Rigel. Additionally, FOTW provides a "life time" warranty and professionally sets-up the mandolin. And you agreed that we could complete the trade after I received the Ky. and decided that I prefer it to my present mandolin. Lots of "upside" to this relationship. Michael McManus
Date: Fri, 12 Aug 2000 Mickey, I received my Rigel A+ Deluxe Custom on Tuesday and I just now put it down long enough to write and let you know I am absolutely thrilled with this incredible mandolin and Folk of the Wood (a.k.a. Mickey Cochran). First, the Rigel- I looked for a long, long time for what I wanted and let go of a 1925 Gibson mando to get this fulfillment of my dreams! The tone is killer and sounds better than any mando I have ever played. It had that "aged" or "mature" tone, from the first time I took it out of the case. The custom ordered solid cream color is drop-dead gorgeous. I have already played it publicly once and it is truly a jaw-dropper. Visually and sonically-this is a stunner. It is really a thrill to watch other mando players turn green; stutter as they ask if they can play MY Rigel, and then watch their eyes pop as they feel the magic. It is almost funny to watch those died-in-the-wool Gibson mando freaks as they make not-so-discreet inquiries about the price and where I got this tone monster. To put it mildly-I couldn't be happier. I may own other mandolins; but I can't imagine ever, ever, ever getting rid of this jewel!!!
Now to Folk of the Wood- I AM A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE!!!!!! You took a lot of time with me (as in answering a bunch of e-mails and talking for a total of an hour or two on the telephone with me.) Your kindness, patience and limitless professional knowledge were incredible. What really blew me away was your eagerness to help me in any way possible. Your passion for music, Rigel and helping other musicians, is unmatched in my 25+ years of playing music and buying musical instruments. I only wish I lived close enough to drop by and jam for a while, I really feel I have made a friend. I have become a walking-talking billboard for Folk of the Wood. If the kind of customer service you gave me is par for the course (and I know it is) I would bet you have never had a customer who walked away from a deal dissatisfied. Finally, you have the greatest, most customer friendly website I have seen anywhere. Your artistic talent obviously doesn't end with your musical abilities. Saying "Thank You" seems woefully inadequate, but that is truly what I sincerely mean. Your customer (and friend) for life, Wendell Gaskin

Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 Hi Mickey, The (Trinity College) Bouzouki has arrived yesterday and I'm very happy with it: It looks very nice, It's worked well and it sounds fantastic! The sound of the pick-up is also v e r y good (much better than the Fishman in my acoustic guitar), and as the playability is also quite good, there's only one thing missing: I need a lot of practice (but it's not too difficult to change from the mandolin). Thanks a lot - viele Grüße an Sophia Norbert Feinendegen, Germany

Thanks so very much for your outstanding and extrordinary efforts to insure that the violin exceeded our expectations! It is very unusual to see a business take the kind of care that you have. I know that we will enjoy playing it and we will most definitely be a return customer. Sincerely, David and Jeanne Burns
Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 Dear friends at Folk of the Wood: I received my new Kentucky KM-150S today, and it looks and sounds great! Thanks for getting it to me so quickly. It is my first mandolin, and I spent a few months looking around on the internet and in my hometown. Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 Hi folks, First, let me apologize for the harsh attitude I presented when Dawn Riley and I received the wrong instrument last week. I've only purchased a few items over the net and I have had more bad experiences than good, including having to threaten legal action and posting horror stories to newsgroups to be reimbursed. I hope you can understand my aggravation and forgive me. You people made right on the order and we received the proper violin in beautiful condition 2 days after we contacted you. Thank you for your quick action in correcting the problem! Again, thank you for everything! George
Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 Mickey, I did get the M-11 in the mail. Everything is fine with it. I put some slightly heavier guage strings on it and to me it sounds and feels much better. Do you have a catalog with items that are not on your website?? If so, can you please send one to me. I'm interested in your string and pick selection. thanks, gary

Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 Dear Mickey: I just wanted to let you know how happy I am with the Weber Bridger Octave Mandolin which I recently bought from you. It is a wonderful instrument--well balanced, great tone, and good looking too. I also appreciate the set-up adjustment you made before shipping to me, as you got the action just the way I like it. This was also my first time to use your trade-up policy, giving me 100% trade value on the Sage 1 which I traded for the Bridger Octave. That is a terrific program you offer. It certainly makes it difficult to buy from anyone else. Thanks again, and I will look forward to doing business with you again in the near future. Ron Maness
Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 BTW Mickey, the Regal Squareneck I bought from you is great. I'm real happy with it. I just wish I had more time to practice. Eric Larson

Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 Mickey, Thank you very much for your informative response. I will keep my eyes peeled on e-bay for your auctions and see what I can find. You were very kind to answer my questions, and hopefully we will open a whole new world for my Dad. Thanks again for your letter, and I'll be looking forward to dealing with you in the future. Tim & Celeste Offet
Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 Great site - a tutorial in itself!
Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 Hi Mickey! I received my KM-675 on Tuesday and wanted to drop you a note to thank you for helping me out on the phone and for your speedy shipping. The mandolin arrived in perfect shape in spite of the fact that the postal service seemed to have done their best to destroy the shipping box - it was *really* in bad shape.
The KM sounds great to me and was set up perfectly, I'm having a great time learning a new instrument (I'm a guitar player) and it has opened my ears to styles of music that I had been pretty much unfamiliar with, especially bluegrass...
I will recommend your site to my friends and expect to do more business with you in the future. Maybe I'll have to trade up to one of those Webers someday! :-) Regards, Bill Coates
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 great site. I was very impressed with the fact the owner called me in California to answer some questions personally, and actually spent valuable business time on the phone discussing mandolin techniques. Very impressive. Skip
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 Dear Mickey: I received the Weber 'Hyalite' yesterday. Knowing I had been atremble with anticipation for days, my wife had me called out of a meeting to let me know. I danced out of work an hour early as I was pretty useless all afternoon dreaming of the plain brown box waiting at home. After a few get-to-know-you moments tuning her up, I was ready to go.
And, yes, although there may be more than a bit of self-fulfilling prophecy in all of this, I fell in love. So sweet, so pliant and full, those ringing notes as vibrant and clean (particularly as compared to the 140S I've been renting) as a 5 year olds dream. Around her neck and over the frets, even my treacly, ignorant fingers felt nimble and, somehow, more sure. I have absolutely everything to learn, it's true, but on this instrument it'll come more quickly and provide more pleasure, I am convinced.
Thank you for your exceptional level of involvement and enthusiasm throughout my exploration, analysis, and eventual purchase, of this little gem. More than your terrific prices, more than your informative and comprehensive website, it was your cheerfulness ( and alacrity) in emailing me, talking to me, that made this an easy and obvious purchase. Craig Holdren
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 I really enjoyed your site. It has a lot of useful information. Keep up the good work. Todd Bowers
Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 Mickey: I just got back in the office today after a week of vacation, so I just read this email. I received the Bridger Octave on Friday, Oct 6, and have been having a ball with it. It is a great instrument! The action was perfect--I really appreciate the set-up you did (you said you lowered the action a little from the factory set-up). It was much better than the action on the Sage (which I had received directly from Weber). I will get back to you later with a testimonial. Just wanted to let you know I got it and everything is sweet. Ron
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 Hi Mickey, The new fiddle got here this afternoon!!! Thanks for the fast shipping and the gift certificate that made it possible to buy the fiddle. For the price, the Cremona is an excellent instrument and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of workmanship and materials! I've never handled a fiddle before and the video walked me right through tuning and basic principles. I was quite impressed!!! Thanks again, Dan Lucky Dan's Detector Shop
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 Dear Mickey, Love my new Regal bass, thank you for making it possible, and thanks for the gig bag. I'll send pictures as I get started on your FOLK OF THE WOOD sign. Thanks again, Ken Hall
Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 Hi this is Brian King. I received the Chet Atkins model yesterday (10-12-00) ,it plays and sounds beautiful.I also tried to leave you positive feedback but because the guitar did not meet reserve the system will not allow feedback .I am pleased with the guitar . Thanks Brian King
Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 Hi Mickey, Late yesterday afternoon my new Weber Bridger arrived. I couldn't be happier with it, and with the process that led to its purchase. As a luthier, I am really impressed with both the wood and the craftsmanship in the Bridger. The sound and the action are wonderful. And working with you has reaffirmed my faith in long-distance transactions. Your trade-in policy made the deal possible, as did your generosity. This was a lot like making a mutually satisfying arrangement with a friend. My sincerest gratitude....Dr. Gerry Snelson
Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 Hi, Mickey---Got a "written confirmation" today in the mail. Thanks. I will be looking forward to the shipping date of this banjo, and keeping my fingers crossed it will sound (and play) like I anticipate. I'm gld to hear you feel so positively about Wildwood. I touched base with a couple of Wildwood players on the Kingston Trio "Musicians' Rendezvous" website. They also like their respective instuments. I will be anxiously awaiting notification that it has been put on the truck. Keep me posted. Regards---NORM
Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 Mickey, Sorry this is late. I'm writing you in regards of the TC bouzouki I've purchase about a week ago. This is a great zook especially for people just starting out. It has a good sustain, tone and is well built. I'm very happy with this purchase. Rich
Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 My new Regal RD 45 (black) squareneck resonator arrived Saturday and I must say that I am very impressed. The sound is very clean, no buzzes, rattles etc. I have played some of the best dobros made in past years and owned a Gibson/ OMI 27 Deluxe for years. This dobro has the quality volume and resonator sound that can compete with the more expensive models. The tone is bright and very cheerful. I chose the Regal because I wanted a dobro just to play at home and get me through until I can get the money for the Sheerhorn of my dreams. I may have to wait a while longer because I would take this to any jam and not be drowned out by those banjos. Mickey and Suzie, thank you again for all of your help. I found you store very friendly and VERY professional. I will recommend your site to anyone interested in music. Let me know when you get that new dobro book done. I can't wait to try it. Your Friend, Gary Boyett Denver, CO
Date: Sat, 7 Oct 2000 Subject: Kentucky KM-150S Arrived well packaged and in 2 days! Set up is perfect, easy to play and exceptional tone for the money. Once again, thank you for another very smooth transaction! Jon Pass Marietta, OK.
Date: Sat, 7 Oct 2000 Hello. Do you have any info on fingering positions for the viloin? I checked you website and the information you gave on holding the violin, tuning, etc, was great! Thank you! Rebecca Nelson
Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2000 Hi, Mickey---Thanks again for your attentiveness. I truly have become a "convert" to FOTW. I have been emailing Russ Scinta, and he mentioned the violin he ordered for his daughter from you came in, and it sounds really nice. I, of course, had to share with him the news that I ordered a Wildwood banjo from you. He purchased an Epiphone/Gibson Long-Neck about two years ago, and like me, was a major fan of one Dave Guard of the Kingston Trio (and Seeger, of course), so he "understands" the mild obsession. My wife is another story, however...I must compliment FOTW and you for the customer-relations. I actually read many of the testimonials on your site, and have also listened to any number of the audio samples of banjo picking. I consider the fact that I found your site via a random web-search on banjos to be fateful at this point. I have also bookmarked a number of banjo sites from months ago on my laptop, including Wildwood, Deering and Ome/Ode. I grew up in an era when purchasing a 5-string banjo was not considered an early sign of mental illness. These days, it's becomming a bit rare I suspect, although the folk/bluegrass market is loyal, and I suspect fairly discriminating. Whether I fall in love with this instrument, or not, rest assured I am totally satisfied with FOTW and your personal involvement. I feel I was treated more-than-fairly, and will be recommending your site (and business operation) to anyone looking to purchase an instrument. Word of mouth and email these days counts for a lot. As a Lutheran pastor, I have a fair amount of credibility and a pretty diverse network of connections. I know Russ was glad I gave him a "heads up" on you folks, and I would not hesitate to do so in the future! Regards--Norm Gauch
Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 Mickey, Thanks so much for your quick response. I heard from Irene right away and we have made arrangements to swap the HD for a tuned one! She said that it could have been bumped badly in shipping which could have jarred the bridge, or it may have been shipped without being fully tuned, as the regular shipping person was on vacation when this one was shipped. In any case, she assured me that these are shipped all over the world and stay in pretty good tune. I was VERY relieved to hear that. Trying to tune all those strings, (and they kept stretching) was giving me a devil of a time! I appreciate the quality of your customer service! Susan Silva
Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 I enjoy learning the fiddle that I purchased from folk of the wood, now what will be next.....Mollie Roth
Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 My primary interest is Mandolin. I've heard a lot of positive comments about your company. PS, nice website. Steve Hansen
Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 Received my banjo (Saga Style III) yesterday and everything was intact. Really like the way it sounds.....a lot different from the open back that I have. I want to thank you for your courteous service. If I need any extras, I will definitely order from you.....who knows....I could move up before long to a Stelling. Thanks again......and ROLL TIDE. Fred Johnson
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 Mickey, It turns out I have a pretty solid buyer for this guitar here so let me do that deal first and then get back to you. I hope the references I have given people about your business have or will bring you customers - however, you need not feel anything like indebtedness. You are running a quality business - and some of the best prices I've seen anywhere - and I just feel good about being able to tell folks about you! Dan Liechty
Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 Mickey, thank you very much for the tuning suggestion for an octave mandolin to be tuned like a plectrum banjo.
I look forward to receiving your catalog. Charles Pascoe
