We will start out by playing a simple tune in the key of D using the D major tuning: DAA
Each "/" is a strum representing down and up beats. The numbers 1 2 3 4, under the tablature, represent a tap of the foot on the downbeat. Count evenly and play the strums in combination with the melody, indicated at the bottom line on the A melody strings. Pay careful attention to each "&" that falls between the numbers (downbeats); these should be played with an up-strum (reversing the strum in an upward motion instead of a downward motion normally played on the downbeat).
If you want, you can first learn the chord progression indicated by the chord diagrams above the standard notation with slashes. When playing the chord progression, simply strum a downward motion of four beats per measure...each slash would represent one beat.
