Subject: DOWNUNDER CALLING
G/DAY MICKEY.
Greetings Al,
AL from NEW ZEALAND, would appreciate if you could advise which type of banjo would suit me, I have been teaching myself to play banjo with cds, books, also vid eos from the states, for the last couple of years, my first banjo was a SAMICH, after awhile I did not like the sound, then I traded up to a FENDER,, but alas, I was still not happy , I cant seem to find a banjo with that ring to it,
So far, you're using some lower end imports...which, especially if not set up correctly, sound very hollow...almost like you're playing in a cave. To get away from this sound, you'll want a banjo with a solid tone ring and the right combination of higher end features such as a multi-ply rim, heavier parts, well-made resonators, etc....and again, you'll want it set up properly too. Hence, on your next purchase, make sure that a full set-up is included with the purchase.
I do not intend to play professionally, just for my own enjoyment and the family, I realize that you only get what you pay for, I am not looking for top of the range, but there must be a middle of the road banjo that would give me that banjo ring, I would really appreciate your help
For a solid middle of the road banjo, you might consider a Deering Sierra or a Gold Tone OB-250...or a high end Morgan Monroe...all of these will get you away from the "cave" sound...these are all banjos that qualify for bluegrass settings. If you're looking for versatility, you can always consider a more woody tone as offered by the Goodtime series. Be sure to check out our FAQ section...and get back with me on how else I might assist you...Mickey
MANY THANKS AL
