Hi,
My name is Lawrence Bilardi and I have a question for you. I am considering trying my hand at the mandoline (mandola?). The type of music I would like to focus on would be classical do you have any suggestions. I currently play classical guitar (some).
Thanks, Lawrence
Greetings Lawrence,
For classical mandolin, you'll want to consider a more light sounding mandolin. Originally, classical mandolin was performed extensively on a bowl-back...however, these can be a little too light sounding. And, if you're looking for more volume and projection, along with versatility, you'll want to consider a flatback mandolin...which is pretty much all that's available as new today. The bowl-backs can be found as used for the most part...
Now, within the realm of flatbacks, you have many to choose from. If you're looking for value, your best bet would be to go with an import. If you're looking for the ultimate in one mandolin, for the purpose of playing classical music, you might consider the Weber Hyalite (with matte finish) or most any Rigel for their superb roundness in tone. I also like the Breedlove Orka of which almost sounds like a piano...
To discuss this with a mandolinist, feel free to call Tradd @ ...he's in today.
