Mountain Dulcimer 3-String vs. 4-String

Subject: 3 stringed dulcimer
Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2004 22:55:39 -0600

Hello,

I am more interested in purchasing a three stringed dulcimer.........I was wondering a few things. One, If you offered one or where I could get one possibly, and two, what is the difference between 3 and 4 stringed dulcimers. I don't really know much about dulcimers, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Dora

Greetings Dora,

Yes, we can have a 3-string dulcimer custom-made for you by Folkcraft...not sure why you would want one over a 4-string dulcimer. They're essentially the same instrument...only, an extra string is added to the melody pair...this gives more substance to the melody strings...since the strings are doubled up. They play the same and they're tuned the same...hence, my suggestion would be to go with the 4-string dulcimer....be sure to check out our online lessons for dulcimer along with the many video samplers demonstrating the dulcimers that we currently carry. This will give you a good idea of what a 4-string mountain dulcimer sounds like...see below for these links...Mickey
