Mandolin & Acoustic Guitar: On Using a Flatpick

Subject: Right-Hand Flatpicking Problems

Right-Hand joint problems when flatpicking:

I haven't heard of this problem to date...I suspect it could be a tension problem...here are some suggestions you might try:

1. Try loosening up your grip on the flatpick...it doesn't have to be held too tightly. In fact, it sounds better with a little more looseness than when the pick is gripped too tightly. The pick should have slight movement when the pick strikes the string...

2. Additionally, use a loose wrist when flatpicking...a stiff wrist will also stiffen the grip of the flatpick...by loosening your wrist movement as you strike the strings with an up and down motion, you also will be adding to a more relaxed tonal response.

3. The choice of flatpick may also have an influence on the pain you're encountering in your thumb joint. Try experimenting with lighter gauge flatpicks. This way, when the pick strikes the string, there will be less vibration transcribed to the thumb...a stiff flatpick will no allow the thumb to bounce back as easily.
