Mandolin Family Instruments: Oval Soundholes

Subject: Re: Weber Bridger

Hi Mickey,

I am still reviewing my options for a mandolin. Am I correct than an oval hole model will have better low end response and overall resonance than a comparable F-whole model? Regarding the Weber Absoroka, do you notice a difference in sound between the oval and D-hole designs? If so, how would you describe it? Do you hear any difference between the Absoroka D-whole and Bridger models? Finally, is there a noticeable difference in sound in the Rigel A+ deluxe between the F-hole and oval models.

Thanks,

Dan

Greetings Dan,

An oval soundhole does seem to "open-up" the mandolin...adding to its resonance and roundness in tone...this in itself, should also contribute to more bass end...at least more sustain on the bass.

No, the Oval and D-holes do not vary in tonal range...they both sound the same...I do like the D Oval soundhole's appearance...

The Bridger model has more resonance and aliveness due to the matte finish. The Absaroka has a tighter sound with less sustain. This can be desirable when playing fast melodies and the notes seem to have more distinction.

On the Rigels, there seems to be less difference in tonal range between the oval and f soundhole models. Not sure why...nonetheless, both models have a sweet vintage tone to them...and a very nice full bass end. Maybe this is the reason the differences are not as pronounced on a Rigel; the Rigel sounds full and resonant with an F soundhole...so much so, that when adding the oval soundhole, there seems to be only a subtle difference.

Hope this helps, Mickey
