Learning an Acoustic Instrument: for the Visually Impaired

Subject: Banjo lessons.

I have visited your website on many occasions, sunce I have obttained my new banjo. I have a dilema, however, regarding your lessons. I am blind and I am attempting to learn to play by ear. I did, obtain a music course designed for blind and bisually impaired students. It was great but, unfortunately, I only learned two songs. I am haveing a difficult time trying to pick along with commercially recorded songs. My questioon is this. Do you have any recorded lessons, for intermediate to advanced students, which are recorded inslower speeds that graduate into a faster speed? I also do not know any other blind musicians to ask, either. Any help or referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Dan

Greetings Dan,

You would be a candidate for audio lessons by Red Murphy...she used to put together an audio tape series that included no written music whatsoever...it emphasized learning to play banjo by ear without ever seeing a written note. The new Murphy Method seems to focus more on video instruction...I'm not sure if she's still offering the audio series...here's their website: http://www.murphymethod.com/

I'm also working on including audio/sound files to our entire banjo lessons section...so you might want to stay tuned on our website for these updates. These video/sound files will start off slow and then gradually speed up...which may be of interest to you in your learning efforts.
