How to Tune the Hill Country Backpacker HC-5 Dulcimer
and Other Short Scale Dulcimers
The Backpacker has a shorter scale length than the average mountain dulcimer. This is what gives it its unique tone and ease of portability. However, because of its short scale length, it cannot be tuned to the regular tuning of a standard size dulcimer (not without some rattling of the strings). For optimal tonal range, the Backpacker is tuned to F Ionian Tuning...with the low bass string tuned to F and all other strings to C.
F (low string) C (middle string) CC (melody strings)
