Squareneck Dobro: Construction

Subject: FENDER FR-50 SQUARENECK DOBRO

Hi

I am considering buying a Fender FR-50 Squareneck as a beginner instrument. You folks are known for your knowledge of dobros. What is your opinion on this model for a beginner, or do you recommend another brand for a beginner. Thanks in advance for input you may have.

Phil

Greeting Phil,

I'm sure the FR-50 would be fine to start on...it's hard to mess up a squareneck...since there really isn't much to their set-up other than making sure:
1. All strings are properly set in their respective slots of both the bridge and nut.
2. There are no rattles or buzzes with the resophonic cone system. (check our FAQ on how to pinpoint buzzes)
3. The neck is fairly straight and does not show a pronounce bow.
4. The tuning machines are not too stiff.
5. There is not separation on the heel where it meets the body.
6. There are no structural flaws that can be problematic at a later date, such as cracks, separations, loose bracing, or binding problems.

Make sure there is some kind of warranty that does come with the dobro...and, hopefully, you're purchasing from someone that includes a thorough set-up/inspection before it comes to you.

Hope this helps...Mickey

Does the rd 52 Black lighting have a adjustable truss rod?

Squareneck dobros usually do not come with adjustable truss rods...the main reason is that the neck is so thick that it's completely unnecessary to concern yourself about the neck warping and needing adjustment...it doesn't appear that the RD-52 has a truss rod...

Roundneck dobros almost always come with a truss rod...

Hope this helps...Mickey
