Mandolin Theory: Beginner Level

Subject: Scales on Folkwood
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 00:19:11 -0500

Hello I am a beginner at mandolin and was wondering what the definition of a scale is. Thanks

A scale is a sequence of notes that falls under a key structure...the notes are played singularly and follow the intervals of a predefined tonal center...for instance, a major scale would have the following intervals:
C D E F G A B C ....the half steps occur between the E and F and the B and C...

A Scale is the basic building block of melodies, harmonies and chordal structure...almost the entire skeletal frame of a song can be based on one scale. Learning to build harmonies and chords requires a basic understanding of scale intervals. Mickey
