Violin/Fiddle: Converting to Left-Handed

Date: Thu, 05 Aug 2004 08:47:11 -0400
Subject: left handed conversion

Hi Mickey!

I am a former clarinetist that recently purchased a student violin because I always wanted to play one. BUT..I am left handed and of course, the violin that I purchased is a right handed one. Can I just switch the strings around for now
because the total conversion would be too costly for me right now. Also, what is the difference between fiddle strings and violin strings?

Thank you
Debra

Greetings Debra,

Sure, a right-handed violin can be converted to a lefty. Only, there are a few considerations...keep in mind that the bridge and nut will need some proper filling and cutting to ensure excellent fit on the reversed strings...and, also, you'll want to be aware that the bracing on the underside of the top will be reversed...the bass bar will end up on the treble side. You may find this affects the tone...if it's a student level violin, I wouldn't concern myself. The lefty conversion should be performed by someone who has knowledge in this area; do not attempt this job yourself. We ourselves only charge 30.00 for this procedure. You should be able to find a local music store to accommodate you on this conversion. Keep in mind that most all violin teachers will encourage left-handers to play right-handed...I personally believe, as a left-hander myself, that you should pursue what works best for you...now, if you're taking up violin as opposed to fiddle, and plan on playing in an orchestral setting, it's highly recommended that you do learn to play right-handed.

Fiddle strings and violin strings can be interchangeable. Many times, a dedicated fiddle string will be manufactured to add brightness and volume to the tone. There are many violin strings with gut core that would not work well as fiddle strings.

Hope this helps, Mickey

Subject: Conversion- Right to Left handed violin

Hi,

I wanted to inquire about the pricing of converting a student, full size violin from right-handed to left-handed.
Silly me purchased one off of eBay and forgot that maybe I should get a lefty violin.

Thanks,
Rachel Ferrante

Greetings Rachel,

To convert a violin to left-handed would be 30.00...and requires nut and bridge rework...it would be more cost effective for you to see a local dealer and save on the shipping to and fro...

Now, you might also want to reconsider having it converted...many left-handers are learning violin right-handed...making it easier to fit in with a symphony...or, even attempting to learn violin through instructional media...

If you're planning on learning fiddle, there's far more latitude in playing left-handed...if you're learning violin, I'd recommend that you do learn to play right-handed...Mickey
