6 & 12-String Banjo: Approaches

Subject: deering 6 string
Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 21:06:56 -0500

hi Mickey,
long time Taylor guitar player, mostly for church and some coffee house gigs....want to add banjo sound to some music...and am about ready to order Deering B-6....
since i fingerpick guitar (without picks) will the sound without fingerpicks be full enough, or do i need to use dunlop or other picks?
thanks in advance

geo

Greetings Geo,

The 6-string banjo is far more responsive than a standard acoustic guitar...therefore, when playing with fingers, you'll find that it's still plenty loud and full...I personally play without picks on occasion, and have found fingernails bring out more clarity...even so, if you're looking for a different sound, more thumpy on the bass, then the flesh also works well...

I'd still suggest learning to play the 6-string banjo with fingerpicks for there will be occasion where you may be competing acoustically with other loud instruments...and, fingerpicks are the answer to ensuring a full volume and punch...

Wishing you the best in your research...

Mickey
