Thank you Mickey!
Greetings G,
I need to play in the "lap" position due to results of neck surgery... I can move a slide around but cannot fret with my fingers (and can't bend my wrist around to slide in normal guitar position).
If you have any ideas I could try to merge the two styles they would be appreciated.
The blues style can be effectively played on the lap style...you might want to check out some of our video samplers on our website to see a demonstration of the many possible styles that can be achieved by lap style squarenecks...I, myself, am an eclectic doboist ...and do not consider myself a bluegrass dobroist...I love all styles on dobro and am now under contract with Mel Bay to finish my "Dobro Solo (playing dobro unaccompanied)" book...
Once I get the dobro (still deciding between Weissenborn & regular square neck) I will buy your tapes.
Yes, the "Intro to the Dobro Parts I & II" tapes truly cover more on other styles than straight ahead bluegrass...I believe you'll really enjoy the many possibilities displayed on the videos...there's more focus on building a foundation and understanding all of the possibilities of the squareneck Dobro than simply a focus on learning one song after another.
I was a semi-pro blues bass player in the Detroit area before the surgery.
I actually had a "lap bass" made that works pretty well.
Hopefully I can adapt squareneck technique into blues competence for my own enjoyment.
As a squareneck dobroist, this will set you apart...one CD I'd highly recommend, that demonstrates where you can carry your Dobro within New Age, Blues, Rock, Jazz, Celtic and Bluegrass would be "Under the Wire" by Jerry Douglas...I'd highly recommend finding this CD if you're looking for further inspiration of what can be done with squareneck dobro...
Keep on Pickin', Mickey
thanks again,
G
