Violins Fiddles: Cleaning the Bow Hair

Date: Sun, 21 Mar 2004 17:38:21 -0800 (PST)
Subject: Re: Fwd: cleaning bow hairs

Hello! I'm convinced by bow hair needs cleaning. My instructor says to take the hair off (attached, of course to
the parts at either end), dip it in de-natured alcohol, fan it in the air, and then replace it. What do you recommend?

Dianna Decker

Hello,

This is Steve Perry for Folk of the Wood. Generally
alcohol or xylene is rubbed along the hair with a
saturated paper towel. After a substantial period,
the rosin stops coming off. Then the hair is washed
with shampoo and rinsed. Dry with the frog on the
bow, very light tension. Watch carefully to make sure
the hair doesn't shrink tight and overstress the wood.
