6 & 12-String Banjo: Emulating a 5-String Banjo

Date: Thu, 4 Mar 2004 21:47:27 EST
Subject: MNB-6 6 String Banjo

I play a guitar some and am interested in a 6 string banjo. I know nothing about banjos and I do not want to take time to learn a 5 string. I am interested in the MNB-6. Does it have the same sound as a 5 string? I know it is made in Korea, but what do you believe about the quality of this banjo compared to a Gold Tone 6 string?

Thank you, Blaine

Greetings Blaine,

Glad to assist:

Yes, you can recreate the sound of a 5-string banjo on a 6-string banjo...a lot has to do with the roll patterns and tuning...we have a video which demonstrates this well: "Introduction to the 6 and 12-string banjo" of which you might consider purchasing before investing too much in a 6-string...

Available on our website or through Elderly Instruments at www.elderly.com

Both the Morgan Monroe and the Gold Tone 6-strings are of similar quality (and are an amazing value)...both would serve you well if properly set up...which we perform before either ships...

Hope this helps...Mickey

Subject: Question about the" 6 vs 5 string Banjo"
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 16:56:20 +0200

Hye Mickey!

Greetings Tarik,

First off I want to say I enjoy so much your site ! (before all , excuse my english)
I'm playing arabic and french  music on my guitar, and i realy love bluegrass musik too.
And i would like to buy a Banjo. The Banjo 5string is realy funy to play but i can't play all kind of musik with it.
because the downest note is D (i think) and its E or G for a guitar or Banjo 6stg.
So I'm asking me this question :  if i buy a 6string banjo, can i turn the tune EADGBE of it
into EGDGBD ?

Yes, you can tune it so that it emulates that of a 5-string banjo...I do this myself...and, you can imitate a 5-string banjo sound by playing in open-G tuning...the tuning I use is: D G D G B D

i think i can turn off the last string E into D. without problem , and the A String into down G
,but  can i found a systeme fore make the octave high G like a capodastre but just for one string ?

I'm not too sure about bringing in an octave string...it shouldn't be necessary since you can create your own rolls to fit that of a 6-string banjo...

Or a another way to imitate a 5-string Banjo with a 6string one... (but just for fun)

I'll be putting up a lesson section on playing 6-string banjo on our website at:

http://www.folkofthewood.com/page3.htm

And, I'll be including rolls to fit the open-G tuning...so please stay tuned on our website...Mickey

I hope you can understand my question... (very sorry for my english)
Tell me if you don't understand it , and i'll try to find somebody for a better translation ...

Thank you in advance, and good continuation for your great site !

Tarik, from Paris.
