Subject: mandola octave mandolin tunings

I've built acouple of guitars in the past and am considering building a mandola or octave mandolin what I need to know is can a mandola or an octave mandolin be tuned to DBGE like a guitar without the thing blowing up. I'm lazy and don't want to go thru the process of learning new chord forms and scales
Greetings,
Tuning to DBGE is commonly done on Plectrum banjo...which has a longer scale length than both the Octave and the Mandola...You might be able to use this tuning on the Octave by using a lighter gauge string...without putting too much stress on the neck...whatever you do, do not attempt this tuning without utilizing a lighter gauge string on the G's D's and A's...the E's can be standard for both tunings...
