Norman Blake was born March 10, 1938, in Chattanooga, Tennessee...He grew up in Northern Georgia...where he immortalized the towns he grew up in with the songs: Back Home in Sulpher Springs and Coming Down From Rising Fawn...
Clue #2: I began my musical career in the mid-50s at the Tennessee Barn Dance on WNOX.
Norman Blake quit high school to pursue playing mandolin in a band.
Clue #3: I played in the famous session Will the Circle be Unbroken with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Norman received a gold record and a Grammy for this effort...
Clue #4: I at one time toured with Johnny Case...playing both guitar and Dobro.
Norman also toured with June Carters road group.
Clue #5: My solo career didnt start until after my stint with Red, White and Blue (Grass)...Ginger and Grant Boatwrights group...1970s.
Red, White and Blue (Grass) played in Atlanta at the Underground City in one club for some years...
Clue #6: In 1981 I won the Best Bluegrass Guitar award in the Frets Readers Poll...and Best Multi-Instrumentalist in 1986...
Frets was at one time the best acoustic oriented magazine available...covering many aspects of the medium with many players giving workshops on playing technique...Frets ceased its existence in 1989...it recently was reissued by Guitar Player Magazine.
Clue #7: In 1971 I formed the Dobrolic Plectral Society with John Hartford, Vassar Clements and Tut Taylor.
This band lasted for three years...and preceded Normans solo career.
Clue #8: At one time, I was drafted and stationed at Panama Canal...I worked as a radio operator.
Norman formed the Fort Kobbe Mountaineers during his stint in Panama Canal...not surprisingly, he was voted Best Instrumentalist of the Caribbean Command...learn more at: http://www.theacousticcafe.com/norman.html
