The following dulcimer fingerboard layout denotes where every note is located for an 18-fret standard dulcimer with the 6 1/2 fret addition...this layout applies to the Ionian D Tuning...it makes a great reference for finding your notes and determining where to place your fingers for tablature notation. By observing the fret numbers to the left, you can more easily learn both the tablature positioning and the names of the notes you will be playing.

Notes: This illustration also points out the 6 1/2 fret location along with the names of the strings...which we will be refencing throughout the dulcimer lessons section.

Keep in mind, some dulcimers do not have the 6 1/2 fret; if yours doesn't have this fret, you can ignore this placement on your dulcimer...all other note locations still apply.
