Banjo: Wood Choices

Subject: Banjo - different woods
Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 12:00:46 -0400

Greetings,

Glad to assist:

I am new to all this, but in my research I have noticed that there seems to
be maple banjos and mahogany banjos. What difference does to wood make. Is
one better than the other in quality, sound or durability?

Not necessarily a better quality...only a different quality...the choice of woods can be based on affordability, type of application and looks. For instance, in bluegrass settings, the most common choice of wood, and the wood that set the precedence with Earl's banjo, would be maple. Mahogany is more versatile and offers some warmth over and above maple woods. As far as durability, both seem to withstand aging very well.

The Deering
calico looks like a great "own for the rest of your life" banjo, which is
made from maple, but there are other Deerings that are mahogany. I am
unsure which way to g

The Calico, all maple, offers up its own versatility as a banjo that fits well within most applications. It happens to be one of my favorite models that Deering currently offers. If you're just starting out, you might consider the Deering Sierra...it's a mahogany banjo...and it delivers in tone, quality and playability...what a great value!!!
