Subject: hello
i was just wonderin how you would tune a violin with only one fine tuner? because i found one that i want but i just need to no how to tune it with one fine tuner. thank you for your time
sincerely, stevie
Greetings Stevie,
If you're just starting out, you really want all 4 fine tuners....it alleviates a lot of frustration during the learning process. Even with an electronic tuner, you're going to have a hard time fine tuning your violin with the wooden pegs...that is, until you gain experience with the adjusting wooden pegs. Keep in mind, most all the pro violinists use only one fine tuner on the E string...I personally use a Dr. Thomastik tailpiece that integrates all 4 fine tuners (this tailpiece can be purchased at most music stores...including ours)...and makes life easier for me since I personally like to have my violin tuned as accurate as possible...it also makes up slightly for poor playing intonation too...since you have more latitude to be off on a note if your string is accurately tuned.
Hope this helps, Mickey

Dear Mickey,
I love your web site. It is so informative.
Greetings Michelle,
Thanks so much for the kind words...
First, do you sell the tailpiece you recommend (which includes the fine tuners built in)? I can't remember the name of it, but you seem to regard it highly.
Yes, we sell the Dr. Thomastik tailpiece...it's the one I personally use and integrates all four fine tuners...if you ever remove your old tailpiece, be sure to hold on to it to ensure that you always have all original parts to your violin....you can call Tradd @ he's in touch with our violin inventory...

Subject: fine tuners
Can you tell us how to install the fine tuners? I have tried what seems to be everything on my daughter's violin and nothing seems to work, they just flop about. Thank you
M. Kimrey
Installing fine tuners can be problematic in that they have to be the correct size for the tailpiece. Many times a fine tuner will not fit due to it not being designed for the particular tailpiece it was purchased for. My suggestion is to consider purchasing an integrated tailpiece, with the fine tuners preinstalled. This is what I installed on my violin...and I find it far more simpler and far more solid than the individual tuners. The name of my tailpiece is "Dr. Thomastik"...I highly recommend this brand...a concert violinist would not use an integrated tailpiece; however, for the beginning violinist, it's indispensable. Keep in mind, concert violinists usually only use one fine tuner on the E string...
Hope something here has been of assistance to you...Mickey
