Subject: Re: Fwd: square sound posts
Gay,
Steve Perry for Folk of the Wood. I've seen 1 square
soundpost. I can't imagine any effect different from
a round soundpost in most instances. Where more mass
is involved one might experience a tiny decrease in E
string volume on some sensitive violins. The
disadvantage: sharp corners tearing into the top. I
can't recommend experimentation along this line.

What would,in your opinion, a square sound post do to the sound in a fiddle? And are they used, if so what would be the dimensions.
Thanks for the info. I really like your website. blessings Gay Mannon
Greetings Gay,
I've never used one myself...we do have a violin
expert on board:
Steve Perry...maybe he would know something on
these...

So far in searching the web the nitty gritty of getting a sound post stood up and moved around is elusive. If that part is duh? Why does mine fall down before I get it in place. Thanks for the help. Jesse
Greetings Jesse,
This is one of the trickiest areas in setting up a violin. As you're already aware, when receiving violins straight from the factory, sometimes the soundpost can be completely down. It appears to be quite easy to reinstall, until one makes the first attempt at this. I'm sure you're working with a soundpost tool...right? It's quite difficult to teach a process like this over e-mail...
My first suggestion would be to look for an instructional manual with illustrations on setting a soundpost with the soundpost tool
Stewart Macdonald has a comprehensive video available that covers all facets of setting up a violin.
