On Becoming a Mandolinist

Date: Thu, 06 Nov 2003 20:13:56 -0600

hi i was wondering how long does it take to be a mandolin player. thank you.

There are a lot of variables that will determine this...here are only a few:

1. Your desire to learn mandolin...whether you have a slight interest in learning or you have a strong impetus to learning mandolin will determine the length of time it would take to learn...
2. Having a background on other instruments...such as guitar. Some of the same elements of playing guitar are involved with playing mandolin. If just starting out, and never having played an instrument, it will slow down the learning process. Music fundamentals are separate from the physical aspects of gaining the facility to play...the fundamentals remain static between all instruments; therefore, with any background on another instrument, the process to learn mandolin will be facilitated.
3. Having the proper tools...in other words, if you start off on a relatively cheap mandolin, improperly set up, it might discourage you from learning...and, certainly will impede your progress. Having a quality mandolin, with the proper set-up, will inspire you to practice and ensure that your progress is not impeded...

Don't be discouraged by any of the above...for learning is a journey that can be immensely enjoyed. I've always believed that the true goal is the journey not the destination. I've been playing for 30 years now and still enjoy being a student of music.

Keep on Pickin', Mickey
