Subject: top tension vs bottom tension
hi Mike, Can you tell me if there,s any difference in a top tension banjo or a bottom tension banjo? mike from brooklyn.
What's the difference between a Top Tension and Bottom Tension Banjo?
The Bottom Tension banjo is the standard and is far more commonly found. It's my understanding that the Top Tension Hoop was designed so that the resonator did not have to be removed to tighten the banjo head. Today, since tightening a Mylar Head usually only needs to be done once or twice a year, if that, the practicality of having a top tension hoop is not as critical. At one time, when skin heads were more common, and plastic mylar hasn't arrived at the level it is today, the Top Tension Hoop served more usage.
Now, as far as tone goes, there could be a slight difference due to the heavier parts required to accommodate the Top Tension Hoop.
1. There are no bracket hooks as commonly found on Bottom Tension Hoops...
2. A bolt threads through the top of the Tension Hoop...this adds weight to the hoop.
3. The banjo has to be somewhat stronger on the flange, usually making it a one-piece flange, to accommodate the added weight of the Tension Hoop.
With this added weight, and strong structure, there most definitely should be a difference in tone...logically, there should be more sustain. However, I personally am unaware of the exact differences in tone between the two types of Tension Hoops...I suspect the tonal difference between the exact same model, set up with two different Tension Hoops, would be minimal and non-discernable.
Hope this helps, Mickey
