ZoukFest Presents!
Gari Hegedus
Middle and Near Eastern Music
(Turkey, Greece, Iran, and North Africa)
Appearing at the Adobe Bar in the Taos Inn
Sunday, July 18th, 2004 6-9pm
This is the 6th event in the successful new ZoukFest Presents! series of performances.
ZoukFest and Taos Inn are proud to present the finest regional folk and world music artists.
ZoukFest is proud to present multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus, in concert at Taos Inn, on Sunday, July 18th, 6-9pm, with guests Mason Brown and Roger Landes.
For the past three years, Gari has been on staff at ZoukFest, where his soulful and inventive playing, in performances with singer Sonja Drakulich (2001 & 2002) and with Stellamara (2003) wowed audiences at ZoukFest concerts.
Gari devoted his life to music 25 years ago, beginning with the study of Early European, Celtic and Breton music. From there he was led eastward to intense practice and performance of Turkish classical and Mevlevi Sufi ceremonial music. Gari's repertoire and playing styles span outward from Turkey to Greece and the Arab lands as well as to Iran and India. His main instruments are the oud, violin and saz yet his talent is expressed on many other instruments including the mandocello, sarod and setar. As a composer and musician, Gari utilizes the various Eastern modal systems called maqam and has developed the art of improvisation (taqsim) to a soulful level for which he has become highly recognized.
Performing on oud, saz and violin, with guests Mason Brown on pardessus and bass violas da gamba and Roger Landes on bouzouki and oud.

Are there any bluegrass associations or groups in Southern New Mexico?
Specifically around Alamogordo, Ruidoso or Cloudcroft. I'm a musician here
in Reno with the Northern Nevada Bluegrass Association and I'll soon be
moving to the Cloudcroft area.

Howdy Mickey,
Happy New year. Although there is not a lot going on here we are trying to revive the Southern New Mexico Music and Dance Society. We've done two concerts with another coming up Thursday Jan 30th featuring Stephen Bennett world class guitarist. He is the only guy to win both the fingerstyle and flatpick championship at Winfield Kansas. His harp guitar work is un matched. A great performer. That will be at the Black Box Theater in Las Cruces. I am the contact for that event so if you like pass it around. I'll also send it to the address below.
I've been doing a lot of playing and teaching privately and workshops. A few tours coming up in Feb March ad setting up April. Lets Stay in touch, Steve Smith (Contemporary Mandolinist)
Greetings Steve,
Thanks so much for the update on the Las Cruces Acoustic Scene...
If you ever have flyers of local shows, send us up a few...we would be happy to post them at the store.
Dan Lambert came by the other day...we spent half the day just visiting and picking...he's also interested in doing some video instructional and audition tapes...I have to thank you for informing him that I'm still around...
Haven't heard from Derek in quite awhile...
Hope you can make it up sometime...Mickey
Steve,
Do you still have the local acoustic club in Las Cruces? Or, would you know of any? If so, please forward to me and to the e-mail below...
Hope all is well with you these days...Mickey
