Following are the original clues for this contest: Clue #1: I was born July 18, '54 in Lawrence County. This was in eastern Kentucky, five miles from the nearest store. He was schooled through grade three in a one-room schoolhouse which included all eight grades in that single room. Clue #2: I was playing mandolin at the age of six with my very own Family Band. When he was five years old, he was taught to play melodies on the mandolin. Clue #3: At one time, I teamed up with Keith Whitley. When only a teenager, Skaggs teamed up with Whitley...Whitley was about the same age at the time. They played covers of the Stanley Brothers exclusively. Clue #4: In 1969 I joined Raplh Stanley... In 1969, Skaggs at age fifteen joined Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys where he played fiddle and mandolin for two and a half years. Clue #5: I learned a lot from Emmylou... Skaggs was well associated with Emmylou Harris...be sure to hear a session of Ricky Skaggs and Emmylou Harris on the album: "Roses in the Snow". Clue #6: Bill Monroe was my mentor...I'm even shown jamming with Mr. Monroe on the documentary "Bill Monroe, Father of Bluegrass Music"... This video is a must-have...a very thorough documentary covering the true essence of who Bill Monroe was and the major contributions he's made to our American heritage of bluegrass music. Clue #7: I had the blues on Highway 41... One of Ricky's mainstream country hits...great banjo picking throughout. Kind of a merger between bluegrass and country. Clue #8: Listen closely for you can hear the Kentucky Thunder welcoming in a new storm of Bluegrass Music... "Kentucky Thunder" is the name of Ricky's band...and, I personally had the honor of seeing them perform in person at the Ryman Auditorium Summer 2003. I don't believe a band could be any tighter...every note was in its proper place and well articulated. Willis "A history of bluegrass music in the words of its pioneers...631 pages!...available through Folk of the Wood & Mel Bay...Retails: 49.95
Skaggs spoke about showmanship, "I've always tried to look my best to look clean and decent. But all the musicians got to participate. You can't have some guy on Dobro® who's down all the time--who don't never smile or cut up and have a good time. Can't have a guitar player that's standing there, playing rhythm and looking up a thousand miles away in the sky somewhere thinking about how he'd like to be out fishing or squirrel hunting or something like that. You can't have a banjo player standing there dead-headed and won't look and smile at the crowd or look up and wink at the girls. If a crowd sees that you're having a good time on stage, then they have a good time. If you're dead, then they're dead."
