2000 TESTIMONIALS
From Our Wood-Wise Following Page 1
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 The owner, mickey cochran spent tons of time with me and helped me to make a logical choice. the banjo was 30% off and the case 50% off and without asking he threw in a bunch of stuff like picks, pitch pipe, strap, etc. AND, i never felt rushed or that mickey was acting in anything but my best interests. he's been playing a banjo for 25 years. he was also impressed that i had an f4 mandolin. we got over the long neck issue quickly when he told me that seeger usually used a capo anyway and it was really just a fad and just as easy to play in a different key. instead of starting at the most expensive he talked about a $400 banjo. i had to be quite impressed with him and feeling very trusting for me to spend almost $1000. i think that you will really like this guy and he might
be a tremendous asset to the students at the folklore center. you may want to give him a call. his number is 505-336-1111 Toll Free Order Line ONLY: 888-209-8434 . also, thanks for all your help and i, with your help of course, expect to be a top student!!!!! jim
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 I have been a player and collector of guitars for several decades and have had the pleasure of playing many fine instruments. Initially, I was a bit hesitant about purchasing a less-than-well-known brand of resonator guitar. I had been looking at Nationals and Dobros for some time and had really wanted a older metal bodied guitar but was blown away by the cost of both the newer and older guitars. I happened upon a very enticing photo of a Johnson metal bodied resonator and began doing some research on them. I was fortunate enough to get in touch with Mickey Cochran at Folk of the Wood who not only provided me with very helpful information, but also offered me a deal I couldn't refuse..so I didn't. Aside from the aesthetics of the instrument (I got the Hawaiian model), the quality surprised me a great deal. The sound, action and fit and finish were absolutely wonderful! Considering the instrument was about one-third the cost of a comparable model of Dobro or National I was even more thrilled. This was truly one of the best finds of my many guitar acquisitions. I really got lucky finding Mickey and the Johnson and can, without hesitation, heartily endorse them both highly. If you're looking for a great resonator and a knowledgeable, honest and fair dealer, I don't believe you'll find a better combination anywhere. Check it out..I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised. Jonathan Barron
Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2000 Dear Mickey I received my Kentucky KM150S mandolin in excellent condition, and on time for Christmas. I appreciate all of your effort in getting this out in time for Christmas even though you had none in stock when I ordered. This extra effort shows your dedication to customer satisfaction. I have to admit that I was sceptical about ordering an instrument over the internet. I thought that the only advantage would be a good price, and I would have to give up service in return. Boy, was I wrong! I really appreciate the time that you took to answer my dozens of questions and explain all I needed to know to make an intellegent decision about purchasing a mandolin. Knowing virtually nothing about mandolins, I felt uneasy calling to ask such basic questions, but you never made me feel as though I was asking 'stupid' or 'basic' questions. I sincerely doubt that the education that you gave me could have been had at my local music retailer. Once I received my mandolin, I was a little surprised that it was not 'set up' since you shipped it directly from the factory (in order to get it to me by Christmas). At this point I thought I was going to have to take it to a local shop for setup, and there goes my savings. Wrong again! I can't believe that you were able to explain and de-mystify the set up process so that an all-thumbs neophyte like me could intonate and set up the mandolin by myself. The future savings that I will realize from now knowing how to do a set up myself is quite a benefit in itself. Your very clear instructions and explanations, and your offer to send a newly set up mandolin to replace mine should I have any problems again testify that customer satisfaction is a high priority at Folk of the Wood. I want to thank you so much for making the purchase of my mandolin such a pleasant experience, as well as such an economical one! It is reassuring to know that my experience with Folk of the Wood did not end with my purchase. I appreciate all of your advice not only about mandolins, but also about practical ways to begin learning to play one. I am sure that I will take you up on your offer to call back with questions about learning, playing, and enjoying this instrument, and just talking mandolin in general. Please consider me a VERY satisfied customer, and I look forward to a very long and friendly relationship with Folk of the Wood. Sincerely, John Blakeney

Hi Mickey, I wanted to send you this note to thank you for accessory package which just received. I'm sure the music books will be real handy. It was very
nice of you to throw these items in for free. I will get a CD out to you as soon as I can pick one up. The name of the band is Gopher Broke Bluegrass and they are friends of mine who where involved with White Mountain Bluegrass more friends and a few local artists in putting on a benefit show for my wife and I when I was involved in an industrial accident three years ago. They are a great bunch of guys who would do anything to help someone out. In the event you want to checked them out a little further their website is: http://gopherbroke.tripod.com Thanks again , Dick Knapp
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 Dear Mr. Cochran, Thank you for the kind words and information regarding the imperfections in my new mandolin. I went to the Weber website and I have to agree, they make a beautiful instrument! I really like the Yellowstone and the Big Sky Models, but I'm afraid they may be out of my reach. I think I'll have to take my chances on the KM-675. I wish I could see one in person, but no one here has one. My dream come true would be to find a quality used one. Do you ever get any and could I please reserve one now? I'm willing to wait if it will same me a lot of money. I really want to upgrade my mandolin with you for a more aestheticly pleasing model. How vane can a poor man be?! I can't thank you enough for all of you help and correspondence. I recommend your website to everyone I meet! Wish more businesses were like yours! Sincerely, Al Strickland

Sir, As usual I am astounded and gratified by your quick response. I appreciate your offer of a strap button, but I have many strewn about the house left over from installations of Strap-Locs on my guitars. Back of the heel cap it is then. By the way, got her out of the case last night and I am most satisfied. I have a hollowbody that is maple and there is just something really clear and snappy about that tone which speaks to me. I hope the Year of the Dragon will be good to you. Fare well, Daver

Subject: Octave Mando Shipment Mickey, We received the Octave Mandolin on Wednesday Morning. And we LOVE IT! Thanks so much for the extras that you threw in! We took the mando to a bluegrass jam last night.... it was the hit of the session! What a rich full sound! The most difficult thing so far is trying to stretch your hands far enough to reach those mando chords on the bigger neck. I was impressed wtiht the solid construction and beautiful finish/wood.Thanks for the prompt shipping. I have left a positive feedback on EBAY. Would appreciate if you could do the same. BTW, feel free to use these remarks as testimonial for folk of the woods. Another question... Do you have any types of cases for lap dulcimers or roundback mandolins? We have two dulcimers (hourglass shape) that need protection... Any thoughts? Thanks, Steve Ashton
Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 Mickey, Thank you for your reply to my questions. I appreciate the ease of doing business with you and your company and have already referred some people to your web site! Thanks for everything! Ken Taylor
Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 Thanks for being so prompt and informative. Don't know much about music at all. Really appreciate it very much.
Richard - Have a good day.
Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 I got the dobro bass yesterday. Took it to a local jam session - was a hit! Thanks. David Lehman.
Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2000 In the last week I have played the acoustic/electric Regal Dobro bass in public 4 times. And each time I get lots of positive comments from young and old, and many questions. Many people have approached me and told me that they really liked the tone of it. David
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 Mickey, I've been late in letting you know that the Regal arrived in fine shape. Havn't had time to do more than tune it up. Sure seems quiet compared to my Ome banjos, but then what doesn't ? A very impressive instrument for the money. Terry
Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2000 Hello Mickey, Thanks for the great service. Jed is quite anxious for the KM-630 since he's new to the bluegrass style and the mando (but quite accomplished on the the bass) and moving fast with good instructors and for now stuck with a 1924 Martin a-type. The KM 630 will well fit his plans for this weekend, so again thanks, I'm sure he'll be moving on and trading up soon. Regards, Bob

Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 Hello Mickey, I received the Bitterroot on 2/17. WOW! The action that you set is perfect. I really like the appearance, and the tone and volume are great. I don't believe that I will be looking for another mandolin. I will be trading the Kentucky 675 for the Gold Tone OB-250G shortly. Do you normally have them in stock? Please let me know. Will you also contact me when you receive the Flatiron mando that I shipped to you on 2/15. Thanks for everything. Richard
Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 Hello, Mickey, Well, the Pony Express finally arrived today with the bouzouki book (and the complimentary strings - thank you!), and I'm very happy with the layout/contents - well worth the wait. This transaction has been a little hectic/frustrating for BOTH of us, and again I thank you for your tireless efforts towards making it a successful one. I will definitely keep in touch, for I already have a few items in mind to purchase from you in the near future. I left positive feedback for you, which I hope will meet with your approval - and I pray you will do the same for me. I included our item number below, because it's no longer on the current (eBay) system listing. Some surprise, eh? LOL Take care, my friend - we WILL meet again...All my best, Joseph
Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 Mickey, Received the bouzouki in great shape. Thanks for the quick response and shipping. Everything worked out great and the TC 'Zouk is really beautiful! Thanks again, Sean Hennessy www.blackwatermusic.com
Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 Thank you very much for the advise, I will contact them. Also I would like to thank you for your most helpful 5 string banjo lessons, I had just bought one and I'm now on my way to be "a pickin' and a grinnin' " Jeff :)
Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 I've seen your testimonials page, so I figured sine I had an honest thought, I'd relay it. I've been shopping around for an acoustic bass, I took my old one to a pawn shop cause I hated the thing, I didn't even want to see it. So while shopping, I ran across your website, and it looked like what I wanted, for a lot less than I was thinking, Well I got the thing last night and had a blast for about four hours. Excellent craftsmanship, and yes the sound is what I was looking for. Especially since I so like to slap and pop, there is a great bite when I do that. Thanks, fellas.
Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 Thank you very much for your well thought out answer and your quick responce.
Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 Subject: Re: HELP!!! I need a banjo! Mickey, Thanks again for your help on the phone today. I really appreciate your advice about buying the Deering Goodtime. Take care, Danette Coughlan
Date: Wed, 15 Dec 99 Dear Mickey, Thanks so much for everything!!! You have helped to make this whole ebay thing easy! I will of course put in great feedback. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season. I will email you after the New Year and let you know how my hubby likes the mando. Best always, Merry Traum
Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 Mickey, I received the bridge that we had shipped from rigel for the Rigel A plus you shipped to New Orleans last week. I wanted to drop you a line to let you know how pleased I am with the instrument and to thank you for your assistance in helping to overcome the small bridge problem. As far as the mandolin; I couldn't be more pleased. It's tone is so resonant and rich. Most striking of all is the ease with which it plays. Almost effortless. My left hand feels comfortable above the 7th fret where as with my other mandos I used to experience wrist pain. A truely beautiful intrument and I don't think I would have gotten a better price or better service anywhere else. Paul Tobin, New Orleans LA
Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 Mickey, Thank you for the phone time you spent with a totally new mando (but long time guitar) player discussing my needs. My KM675 arrived yesterday in perfect condition. Unfortunately, my wife won't let me have it 'til Christmas -cruel and unusual punishment to be sure. I was totally impressed with your service and you have gained a lifetime customer. Thank you to the max...Ed Bratt, Satellite Beach, Fl. (PS - my friend loaned me his KM630 in the meantime..smile).
Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 Mickey- Thanks again for right on advice! Followed your instructions and I'm back in the saddle. Now I need only worry about sore fingers. Best season's wishes to Folk of the Wood. Great place! - Phil
Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 Hey Mickey, Got both banjos and they're great; great price, service. I mean, I figured I'd LIKE the banjo, but I really love it and the way it plays/sounds; I've been clawhammering myself silly. I'm mainly a sort of jam-rock-jazz-fusion guitar player and have enough freaky effects boxes to fill a truck...what I'm wondering is, can you recommend a good pickup for my banjo that might give decent results when running through effects? I am not so concerned about reproducing all the subtle woody/acoustic tones of the banjo as I am in getting a good strong signal to my boxes, so I can fool around with it using loops, etc...anyhow, thanks alot! Brett
Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 Dear Mickey, I received the Octave mandolin in excellent shape. It is a very interesting instrument with a lovely tone. I have figured out several of my favorite flatpicking fiddle tunes already. You have positive feedback from me on Ebay. I look forward to visiting your store next time I am in NM. I will be sure to keep an eye on your auctions on Ebay. At the bottom of this email is a link to the bazouki luthier in Taos that I mentioned during our phone conversation. Thanks again..Kellar Winkelmeyer http://www.celticmusic.com
Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 Mickey, The hammered dulcimer package arrived yesterday. You were right the new mahogany is gorgeous. I can't wait for my daughter to see it on Christmas. Merry Christmas, God Bless! Kim Paff
Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 Hi Mickey, Just wanted to let you know that I received my banjo in good shape yesterday and I love it! Thank you. I've conquered lessons 1 - 5 on your free internet lessons and really appreciate having that to get started with. Ready for lesson 6!! Thanks again, Kate Kinney
Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 Hi Mickey, I just wanted to tell you that your Crosspicking book is one of the best books I have, and has greatly helped my flatpicking. I've always had a weak upstroke, and your exercises and songs have helped to develop my technique on both guitar and mandolin. I'm now learning to play the pedal steel. Sometimes I think I've got too many irons in the fire and not enough time. Anyway Thanks for a great book! Happy Holidays Ed
Date: Sat, 25 Dec 1999 GREAT SITE, FOLKS! I revisit it time after time just to look around and "drool" and dream.
Date: Sat, 25 Dec 1999 Mickey, I opened the banjo that Mary bought from you last night and it knocked my socks off! Thanks for giving her such a great deal. It's a very well made banjo and I'm absolutely tickled with it. I've been driving her nuts with it and I suppose I will until I learn how to play it properly. There is a big difference from the guitar and it's been almost 30 years since I played anything with strings, but I absolutely love it!!! Thanks again, Dan Breitenstein
Date: Sun, 26 Dec 1999 My Fiance just got a Saga banjo from you for my christmas present. I love it! I am not a banjo expert but I havent heard a banjo with that much resonance. Thank You. James C. Abbott
Date: Sun, 26 Dec 1999 Mickey I received the mandolin Sat. much to my surprise.Who do you know in the postal service? Ive never received a package that quick. Mandolin is just what I have been looking for. Its not as pretty as the Kentucky but it has a lot more mellow tone. Going to a family jam session this evening and will probably need the pic-up. THANKS Mitch
Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 Dear Mickey, My Deering banjo arrived today. It's a real beauty. I tuned it and haven't been able to put it down. It's really a lovely, well made piece. The online pics are great, but it's even nicer to see in person. .I'll keep you updated, but for now I'm going to read the book and try to get some of the fingering positions down. Thanks for the chat on the phone the other day. You're a great person to do business with and I'd love to meet you in person sometime if/when I get to NM! Again thanks for the great instrument. I know it'll bring me much joy! Sincerely, William G. Miller (Bill)
Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 Hey Mickey, my Goldtone arrived today and is a great sounding banjo. For the money, the craftsmanship, the finish, the play-ability, and overall satisfaction can't be beat. It has a little more punch on the 3 and 4 strings than my Stelling, a little thicker neck ( a little like the Golden Era ), the archtop case is a clone of the Deering case (an excellent case). The gold finish really enhances it. I really appreciate your letting me set this up with Wayne at Goldtone and then getting back to you with the details. My Boston was shipped out Monday and should be getting there soon.
Date: Fri, 31 Dec 1999 Hey Mickey, My Saga banjo came today, and its a lot of fun, I'm glad I got all those books to help me along. Have a great new year, and thanks for the great deal peace etc Don Thanks a bunch, John Hamner
Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2000 Dear Mickey I received my Kentucky KM150S mandolin in excellent condition, and on time for Christmas. Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2000 Hi Mickey Well I've had my new A-plus Deluxe with F holes for about 2 months now and its starting to come alive. I want to thank you for steering me towards this fine instrument. I'm no professional (barely amateur) but this is one of the nicest sounding mandos I've ever heard. A couple of players here who have mandos (F copies) at more than twice the price were amazed at the tone and the loudness of the Rigel. Then I plugged in and it blew them away. Yup, it's a keeper. Thanks again John
Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2000 Great site, fantastic navigation and the weath of pictures, not to mention their quality, was awesome! keep up the great work! Jacob Snyder
Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 Mickey, Mandolin was received last thursday night in perfect condition. Thanks again. I appreciate all your help and will recommend you highly to all those I come across. Quentin
Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 Good job, wonderful*** site. Thanks Terry
Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 Mickey, Just got my new Golden Era Banjo and It's awesome! I took it out of the package here at my office and had to start playing (I of course had my picks in my pocket anticipating it's arrival today). Thanks so much for the great deal and service you gave me. I will definately pass your name onto anyone interested in acoustic instruments. If I have questions or other needs I will certainly give you a buzz. Thanks again too for the additional strings. If I find that I ever want to upgrade (seriously doubt it with this strong instrument), I will let you know. Take care and God Bless! Mike
Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 Hello! Just wanted to say hello and give some needed praise. I have always love acoustic and I never actually started playing an instrument until this year. I first started on the electric bass, but I've really felt something was missing. Being the one of the only people the family who needed an amp. I didn't even know there was a acoustic bass that wasn't stand up. Any way the instrument that I'm learning now is the 5 string banjo and I thought I could go right out and get extra help from the internet. However, almost everyone wanted money for the least amount of help. I really like you cause and I think you really have an outstanding web site. I told my partner(I'm a paramedic and we practice at work in between calls.)that I was so glad that I found music and how I felt it was good for the soul. It feels very good to hear other people say that. Thanx again Mikey
Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 I really enjoyed talking to you today. Thanks for all your insight and I am looking forward to recieving my KM-675 mando. Thanks again. P.S. Great web sight! Ian C.
Date: 15 Jan 2000 Dear Mr. Cochran, The Goodtime arrived yesterday, and I love it! Thank you very much. I am very happy that I decided to purchase the banjo from Folk of the Wood. It's a great package for a great price! I'll be sure to spread the word. Ben Moore
Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2000 Hello Mickey: Just want to thank you for your instruction about my questions on the right hand anchor fingers - ring and pinkie. Now I can dive into practice without worrying about teaching my right hand bad habits, and can just enjoy playing the banjo. I appreciate your time !! Dave

Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 Mickey...I finally got to use the tips you gaeve me for adjusting the bridge on the Trinity College bouzouki. Thanks for the info...the instrument sounds wonderful! I don't know how the bridge got out of adjustment...must have done it when changing the original strings.Love the instrument! Thanks again! Dave Evans
Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 Dear Mickey, Got the guitar a couple hours ago....I love it! Sounds like I'm playing through an amp with the echo on....or something! The action is really good and it frets exactly true. I'm using metal fingerpicks and can get some really good volume and substain. I'm really happy with it and it fits perfectly in my "Dobro" case to boot! Thanks a lot for the excellent service...I will highly reccommend you to all and hopefully send some more business your way. Sincerely, Keith
Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 Nice site-love the instrument pictures! I'll let all my Bluegrass buddies know about it. Keep up the good work! You have decent pricing also-thank you. Mitzi Oden
Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 Wow!! I'm so glad I came across your website!! I play 5-string banjo and I was beginning to think there wasn't anyone else out there who knew the joy of playing music in the woods! I am going to need some stuff for my banjo soon and i'm definitley going to order it from you guys!! Thanks! -Andy
Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 I have just started trying to play the 5 string banjo. I have found your lessons section to be very helpful. I keep checking back to see if you have added any new lessons. Keep it up, I really like them. Thanks, Joe Mason
Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 Mickey, my 620B F style arrived today. Its a beautiful instrument. Thanks for the phone call and all the help. Also thanks for the accessories, hope in the future I can do this instrument justice. Thanks again Rolan Corley
Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 Mr. Cochran, Thank you for your help today in ordering the Weber Absaroka. I really appreciate the service that you gave in contacting the company and setting up the direct shipping. I had talked with other music stores that wanted to ship one in four weeks and their prices were much higher. I would also like to order an Intellitouch tuner and the crosspicking technique book. I would also like your recommendation on a beginner's video/manual set. Thank you again. I will certainly recommend you to others as other pleased customers sent me to you. Best regards, Travis Clark
Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 Hi Mickey, Thanks to your great information and service, I'm a bouzouki player now! Maybe that's overstating it a bit. How's this: I own a new bouzouki. ;-) It arrived Friday in perfect condition. I tuned it up and was playing in minutes. It sounds great and I can't remember being this excited about diving head-first into a new instrument. Thanks again for all your help! -- Bill Burke
Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 Dear Mickey, I have already contacted your company, I spoke with a very pleasant lady who took my credit card information and processed my order for me. I have had my bouzouki for close to a week now and I'm very pleased with it. Wish me luck in playing this odd instrument ! I may just have to tune it like my 5 string banjo and play it Scruggs style :o) Best wishes and thanks Dan Yarbrough
Date: Tue, 07 Mar 2000 Mickey, received the Dobro and all ; I'm pleased. It really looks sharp. Got it tuned and am working my way through some of the lessons. Thanks again for the "super service" Regards, Vence
Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2000 Just wanted to let you know I purchased a Folkcraft Mountain Dulcimer - Walnut from you and received it last week. I absolutely love it! First, it's just a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Second, it has a warm, rich sound. And third, it's so easy to play! I thank you for the opportunity to own one of these lovely instruments and I'm sure sometime in the future, to do business with you again. Cindy
Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 I loaded the video after we spoke. I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT, in fact, I travel from time to time. My companions on my business trip are a baby taylor, a martin backpacker, or my steinberger electric depending on the mood. It looks like I will have to add one of these goodtime banjos to my collection sometime after this transaction. The goodtime WITHOUT the resonator sounded pretty good in the video and it appeared you were playing bluegrass style, is this correct?... I wish I knew more about the different banjo types/styles, etc..., your site was very educational.
Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 Hello Mickey: Just want to let you know that my Goldtone MC-150 got here today and all is in great shape. I tuned it right up and it sounds crisp, clear, and solid. It will be the banjo i cart around when I get with my friends elsewhere, or when I travel - nnine pounds is not bad! Thanks for your usual prompt, helpful, and excellent service. Great Job!! Dave
Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 Hey Mickey, Just wanted to drop a line to let you know how much I appreciate doing business with you. Every transaction was a breeze and everything was as promised. The Rigel is an absolute joy, I can hardly put it down, much to the chagrin of my wife(who does now have a potter's wheel!) I will definitely recommend you and plug you whenever possible. Good luck with your production projects. I am sure they will be first class, informative and helpful to the student. You will be the one I contact for all my future acoustic needs. Sincerely, Tim Winey
Date: Sun, 2 Apr 2000 Mickey, Got it yesterday. Had to make myself go to bed , I couldn't stop playing it. Thanx again I'm sure I'll be dealing with you in the future. If you have a mailing list I'd like to be included. Dan Loiselle
Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 Just thought I'd let you know that I just received my Mandolin via US mail. Thank you so much for the case and the instructional book. This order is actually a birthday gift for a friend, but after seeing and holding the instrument in my hand AND after the great service, I may order one for myself. Thanks again and I look forward to doing business with you in the future. Sincerely, Chris
Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 Hi Mickey: I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that my Rigel R-100 Custom Deluxe arrived today. What can I say besides - WOW! The first testament to the fine craftsmanship of the R-100 is the fact that even after being shipped across 3/4 of the United States, the mandolin arrived to me STILL IN TUNE! The tone of the R-100 is remarkable. Even though the instrument is brand new, it still has the same 'aged tone' of my 1929 Martin Style 20 mandolin. I can only begin to imagine what the R-100 will sound like 81 years from now (when I am 119, and still playing!). The radiused fingerboard is also a true delight to play. Although I have never aspired to be a 'fast player', my left hand can't help but fly across the fretboard with the greatest of ease - even to the point of leaving my right hand still picking at strings several notes behind what my left hand is fingering! All of these features, along with the R-100's fine aesthetic qualities, and it's wonderful built-in pickup, make it a first-rate instrument. Thanks again for all of your help - and the nice 'letter of authenticity'. I'm sure that we will do business again. Sincerely, - Mike Zito
Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 Hi Mickey, The octave mando arrived Saturday in fine shape. Actually, it showed up on Friday, but the postman wouldn't leave it with an empty house, so I had to run out to the post office to pick it up. Then I had the volunteer medieval fest gig on Saturday, so I didn't get much chance to play with it until late Saturday and today. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. Looks good, sounds good, and plays pretty well. Plays darn good, considering the price. I'll be having a good time with it for quite a while, I think. At least until it's time to move up to a Weber or a Jones.. Wanted to let you know that there were a couple of minor problems, which I was able to remedy pretty easily. First, the intonation was off. I suspect the bridge might have moved during shipment. So I adjusted the bridge position to get good matches on the 12th fret harmonic and fretted notes, then checked against open string & 12th fret octaves, 7th fret & open string unisons, and 7th & 12th fret harmonics. It's pretty close now. But here's what I find interesting: although the nut to 12th fret measurement (10 1/16") would indicate a 20 1/8" overall scale length, and the original bridge position was horizontal, my final bridge position is slightly angled from 20 1/2" on the G to 20 5/16" on the E. The other little problem was the end pin kept coming out. I put a layer of tape around the pin and tapped it back in, and it's holding fine now. Actually didn't mind re-setting the bridge; I consider it good practice. So, no major issues. It's a keeper. And the cross-picking book is great - just the sort of thing I was looking for. Thanks, Mark Stayton
Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 Hi Mickey, Please forgive my forgetfulness. I wanted to let you know that the Saga travel banjo arrived Friday, a day ahead of schedule! Thanks for the prompt service. My wife loves it (Me, too). This little banjo has a terrific sound. I tuned it to the key of C, and it worked like a charm. Cheryl just has to transpose her mind to the different chord names, and she'll really be rolling along. It's a great little piece. Thank you very much for recommending it. Sincerely, Bill Fisher
Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 Dear Mickey, Got my mandolin back from you, properly set up. What a beautiful job you did. Thank you so much. The difference in the action is amazing and I can't believe what a pleasure it is to play it now. Thanks again for all of your help. John Blakeney
Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 Good Morning Mickey Well Mickey the long awaited mandolin arrived yesterday morning (17th April) in good order, thank you for all your efforts. As I wrote earlier, the mando was for my wife's (Linda) birthday of 31st March (Just out of hospital, 6 weeks recovery), you might say a little late and you would be right, but so what !!!!!! It was all worth it to see the look of delight and anticipation on her face when I was opening the parcel. The Kentucky lived up to every expectation we held and thank you once again for putting perhaps a small tear in this fellow's eye. Very best regards Peter. Your pal in the UK
Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 Hi Mickey, I just wanted you to know the hammered dulcimer arrived and it's gorgeous. Also, I see I was finally outbid on eBay for the hammered dulcimer so I don't feel bad anymore. I've started playing and aside from some sore muscles (goes with the disease I have, I don't think I'm doing anything wrong), I'm doing nicely already. I've chosen one or two songs to play with the orchestra. I have another question. I am still on the hunt for a small guitar and I just noticed a catagory called "parlor" guitar. Do you have any of these new or used? I need a somewhat shortish neck and narrowish nut because of my small hands and other problems. I'd love to get back to playing guitar (I'm really on a roll here) as well as mando's and dulcimers! Thanks, Jennifer
Date: Sat, 13 May 2000 Thank you very much, Mickey! I really appreciate the service, and I also like the mandolin. My size 13 fingers are doing much better than I'd expected! Scott
Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 I love your website - it loads quickly and easily - and you have great information on it. Thanks.
Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 Great acoustic sit one of the most diversified i have seen ....hanko
Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 Hi Mickey... Just wanted to let you know the Johnson has arrived and I am very happy with it. The case is better than I thought it would be and I love the funkiness of the look and the sound. Ricky got his today also. I talked with him this afternoon. He, too, is very pleased with the Wild Rose (much more than he thought he'd be). We'll be leaving rave reviews on your feedback (although we'll be unable to do you justice because of the limited space allowed. Once again, thanks for your flexibility and fairness. I think we'll be in touch over the years....No doubt Ricky's told you about my having a collection of instruments that goes beyond sanity. My wife doesn't miss a day in telling me that. But, hey, it's what get my juices flowing. I rationalize that it could be worse...I could be spending all my money in bars or at the race track and have nothing tangible to show for it. It works for me, but not for my wife. Speak to you soon. Jonathan
Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 Hi, My name is Bill Burke. I bought a Trinity College bouzouki from you a few months back, and I'm VERY happy with it. I'm now interested in buying an upright bass. I'm curious about the Cremona SB-1. How much are you selling that bass for, and do you have any idea how much it would cost to ship it to New Hampshire? Thanks for your help, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.-- Bill Burke
Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 I'm enjoying the Goodtime banjo I bought from you guys! Brad Darrington
Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 Dear Mickey, I want to thank you again for spending the time with me and being so generous in your efforts to help me purchase the Weber Absaroka. I think I am ready to take the next step up to a quality mandolin and the Weber seemed like the perfect choice. Only I was afraid that the cost would be prohibitive or that I would take too great a loss on the trade in to make a deal worthwhile. As I said I had a friend who bought a Octave mandolin from you a few months ago and had such a great experience that he told me I should contact you directly. Now I see why. With 200 odd e-mails a day, it must be hard to maintain the level of care and attentiveness you showed me but it wouldn't surprise me if you could so impressed I am by our exchanges. I will let you know as soon as I get the Weber and I have packed the Kentucky and the Epi for shipment. They're safely wrapped in their cases and I used about three NY Times Sunday Editions to surround them in the boxes. Of course, I slacked the strings a little, but not so much that the bridges would move. I kept both in very clean condition as I think you'll agree. I have an old Washburn flatback and a 1973 Guild acoustic that I cherish and maintain and these instruments received the same care for as long as I had them. Everything, of course, is original to both with no replacement part. I think the dealer may have tried to install a better set of tuners, but thought better of it. I don't know why he tried since the originals are fine. Thanks again Jon Roberts
Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 Mickey, I received the KM-630 today and it was everything that I had hoped for. Thanks so much for all your help and for getting it to me so quickly. I would definitely recommend Folk of the Wood to anyone. Sincerely, Bill Clayton
Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 Really enjoyed your Website! Nice job. I really think it's the nicest one I've seen in this category. Paul Harris
Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2000 it came!!!! i am so happy, even though only ten minutes after I got it my dad broke two of the strings because he thinks he can tune a fiddle because he can tune a guitar. I went to the music store to buy more strings(expensive little suckers!) and the lady put them on, tuned them and showed me how to do a few things, so it was not the worst of all possibilities. I can "play" an A scale, but you probably couldn't tell by hearing, and as we speak my fingers are sticking to the keys from the hour that I spent putting rosin on the bow. Well, anyway...thanks for the business, this is going to be a fun adventure!! Let me know if you ever get any fiddle music of the Dixie Chicks songs, preferably ones played in the key of A hee hee :o) ~Mollie
Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 Your Video Samples are GREAT!! Keep up the good work! Alan Collard Video Samplers: Check out some of our acoustic instruments in action!
Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 Hi, First let me thankyou for posting your beginner lessons on the net. We send the beginners in our club to your sight to look at these and to learn about the many wonderful dulcimers that are available before they purchase "the big one". Are you going to post the advanced lessons online or will you offer them in a book that we may purchase? We would love to order some if they come available. Last of all, what a strange twist of fate... my dearest friend up and moved to Alto last summer. I couldn't believe what a great place they have, but when I visit out there (which is all the time) I have missed having anyone to play with. Are there any jams or dulcimer clubs in Alto? Nancy lives in Ranches of Santero and while it is fun to sit and play on the hilltop, I saw a black bear and that was the end of that! I can't seem to convert her to playing with me so I would really appreciate if you could let me know where the local jams are. I look foward to your reply, Karla McDonald
Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2000 Mr. Mickey Cochran I recently received the Weber Sage 1 octave mandolin which I purchased from you, and it is a real joy to play. It is a very attractive and well-made instrument, and the octave-lower tuning provides a nice change of pace from my standard mandolins. The deal you made me and the service you provided are matched only by the quality of instruments which you sell. And your 100% trade-in value on any future upgrades is a real bonus for a "frequent trader" like me. I am sure we will be doing business again in the near future. Your satisfied customer, Ron Maness
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 Mickey, I received my Rigel mandolin today and it is everything you said it would be, and everything I hoped it would be. Even though I had pretty much made up my mind on a Rigel, your confirmation that it would be ideal for the kind of stuff I play (Jazz) was right on the money. Thanks. I've played music, bought, sold and traded instruments most of my life. I have never had a fairer, squarer deal, ever. It's not easy to give up a vintage piece that you've had for a long time but the deal you offered me made it absolutely painless. I know that my new mandolin is much better suited for my purposes. Thanks again. My best to you, Rick Breeden.
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 Hello there, I've finally decided to see if I can learn to play the instrument that I have loved to listen to all my life: a dobro. I'm 43 and have never learned to play any instrument-ever. But I've finally decided to put away my fears (or NOT being able to learn how to play) and 'go for it.' I'm interested in the RD-45 with the Mahogany Top and clear finish (the top example on your dobro page). It is absolutely beautiful. Just to be fair, I've emailed Janet Davis Music to see what I may learn from her about the instruments she offers, the pricing (inclusive to my home in Wyoming), and the video/book combos I might purchase to enable me to achieve my goals of learning to play. I would like to close by saying that I have found your site the most informative and helpful in learning which instrument style (roundneck or squareneck) to choose, the history of the Regal Company, and the plethora of accessories which I no doubt shall need (which is a rather large question in and of itself!). Thank you for your outstanding effort in creating a website which has indeed achieved one of your goals: a well written, laid out, helpful, and professional website which I can heartily recommend to all and sundry. So, I'll call you on the morrow and see what there is to see. Yours in Christ Jesus, J.Russell Bailey
Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 Mr. Mickey Cochran I just received the Weber Bridger mandolin which I ordered through you. It arrived last Friday, directly from Weber and right on time. So I got to spend the whole weekend with it. It is really a fine instrument. Wonderful tone, easy to play, and it looks great too. This is the second instrument I have purchased from you, but I am sure it won't be the last. Your service is greatly appreciated. Ron Maness
Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 Hi Mickey, Just a note to let you know the dulcimer arrived today. It's beautiful, and I'm very happy with it. Thanks for accepting my offer, and for getting it right in the mail...I've been like a kid waiting for Santa to arrive! Thanks, too, for the noter and picks. I'll try my hand at putting the new strings on my other dulcimer later. Have a nice evening. Sandra Floyd
Date: 16 Jun 00 Rec'd my new Deering Deluxe yesterday. Came in good condition. Took it to band practice last night. Will have to get used to its loudness and the strings being close to the head will force me to modify my frailing stroke a bit. Looks good. Sounds great. Plays smoooooooth. Thanks for the excellent service. I'll tell my friends. Mike Moxcey
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. We called this morning and it came in, so Barry was able to take it on the mission trip with him. He was thrilled. It is beautiful and appears to be in wonderful shape. We're saving the box until he gets back, just in case, but i think unless something unseen is the problem, that we will keep the guitar. It is lovely and just as you described. Thank you so much. Sorry to be a bother to you. And I know that Barry will be looking to you for future guitar needs. I talked to Barrylast night and he said the guitar is wonderful. He is thrilled. Blessings on you. Ann
Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 Received a Cremona SV-200 from you last year and I'm still struggling. First day it took me a hour just to tune it! But I'm keeping at it. Puts me to mind of the remark made of Jack Benny's playing..."Benny's violin playing sounds as if the strings were still in the cat"! I don't know who said it... However I'm still working on it and have been recently inspired by my son's music class concert. Just wanted to say "Hi" and say thanks for your past support. Take care, Paul
Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 My name is Bruce and I am really impressed with your site. I am presently teaching a group of new dulcimer players , a seven week , once a week," how to improve their individual playing and to learn to improve their individual playing confidence when sitting in and jamming with other musicians. I did not see any where on your site that said I could not refer your site to others. If I do need your permission, please consider this as a request for same. Keep up the wonderful job and wishing that you are having as much fun with your music as I am with mine. I am 74 yrs young. I love playing and sharing the Mountain Dulcimer with anyone who will listen. I also play Mandolin, Guitar, and Harmonica. I belong to the Apple Mountain Dulcimer Club here in Albuquerque. I also have a partner. She and I call ourselves the "Dulcimer Duo". We are starting a program to present an hour of playing, singing and letting the children do a hands on with the instrument. Presently we are scheduled to to our first at the Juan Tabo Branch Library the 10TH August to a group of 6 wand 8 yr olds. If you have time and wish to I would be pleased to hear from you . If not I would understand as I can imagine how busy you must be. Thanks, Bruce Irwin
Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 Hi Folks, Thanks for the great site! I have been searching for a good site on beginning banjo lessons and most of them confused me. I have very little musical background but have the desire to learn. Your site was very easy to understand and I plan to purchase my equipment through your company. Thanks again, Eric Garland
Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 Greetings I recieved my Regal acoustic/electric dobro bass. It was well packed and arrived safe and sound. I have not set it up yet but just tuned and played it acoustic and through the bass amp. I was pleased with the acoustic sound for it does project good and I even think it has a unique "ring" to the bass sound. My son is beyond my time period and as he "slapped out a little tune" he looked up and with a grin began playing the wildwood flower. He still returns to his roots of Ozark Mountain Music. I do think this instrument is a keeper. Hope to cross your path again. Thank You and the nice lady on the phone. JF "Doc" McCoy
Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 Mickey, I doubt you care to hear this but I am so impressed with the "goodtime 2" that I received from you yesterday that I just had to let you know! When I first payed it it sounded great frailing but not so good with picks on so I went to work on it! I finally settled with a snuffy smith ll bridge and ghs almost medium strings, cranked the head down good and snug and WOW! This is a very nice, easy to play banjo with a nice tone and lots of volume when set up properly! I am truly amazed! jon 5 banjos this year! a deering "golden era",ibanez "artist"(archtop),gibson "scruggs standard" goldstar archtop and now a DEERING GOODTIME 2!
Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 Hi Mickey, I received my triolian last friday, and am very happy with it! Plays great, and the intonation is fine. I am thinking about putting in a quarterman cone in the future. Do you sell these? How hard are they to install? Can you recomend a repair book or something else that covers resonator guitars. I'm am natural "tinkerer" as far as instuments are go, and like to upgrade ext... Anyway, it was great talking to you, and I love the guitar! Thanks Fred Fields
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 Mickey, I got the Weber Aspen in the mail from Weber yesterday and sent back the other today. Thanks for all your help. I'm very pleased with the replacement model! It cost me $21.43 in shipping to sent it back to Weber. If you want to send your Crosspicking book and strings, picks, or whatever you think is fair to make up the difference that would be fine with me. I really appriciate all your help. I'm a happy customer. I'm saving money so I can trade up in the future--maybe the Bridger model--I hear that it is really nice. Thanks for all the "hand holding" in my descision on what mando to buy. Looking forward to buying from you in the future. Haven't had so much fun since the hogs ate my brother!!!! Ben
Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 Mickey and staff... Had foot surgery last Friday ....so I've been wearing the KM1000 out!! (and the Goodtime too!) Got my hands on a copy of your crosspicking book...looks like one of the better tomes I've seen on mandos'... the arrangment of Soldier's Joy kicks! I also like John McEuen rippining it on Uncle Daves old machine!! Hey, could you send a bumper (guitar case) sticker with that dobro if you have any? Thanks. Frank Parker
Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 Hi, My name is Mike and I have owned a blueridge acoustic serial no. BR-35 or is it BR-3S (the 5/S look very similar)for about 6 years. I would appreciate it if you could tell me something about its construction etc. and its probable market value here in Britain. I paid £260 pounds at the time of purchase and have been told that it might be worth £700-£800 over here? I'll never sell it as it is the most exquiste guitar it has been my pleasure to play. The tonal qualities are outstanding and completely blows away yamaha, takemine, etc. Anyway thanks in anticipation of any information you can supply. Mike.G
Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2000 Once again, you have come through for me with a prompt and informative answer .. thanks so much .. it sounds like the transducer would be the better route .. if I understand you, it would provide better amplification and at the same time would be less expensive!! Thanks also for the offer to "upgrade" .. I think I will try to pursue the transducer idea first, and if that doesn't pan out, I may take you up on your offer .. thanks again, and have a super holiday!! Tom
Date: Sat, 1 Jul 2000 Recently purchased a KM-250s from you and can hardly put it down. This does not keep me from checking your site to see if you have put up pics of the Kentucky Custom 675 "Blacktops" that I had heard you might carry. Your 100% upgrade is an enticement that is nearly impossible to ignore. Fare well. db
Date: Sun, 2 Jul 2000 Mickey, I followed your advice .. my local guitar guy looked the dobro bass over ("hey, nice instrument, man!!") and he agreed with you .. we experimented a little there in his shop with a "Dean Markley Acoustic Transducer" .. we then tried adding a "Sans Amp Acoustic Di" which seemed to help too, so I got those along with a little "Crate" bass amp .. now that I see what a transducer is and does, I really like the idea, when you want to be acoustic leave it off, when you want more volume stick it on .. this is a new learning experience for me as I know absolutely nothing about music electronics .. what I will do now is play around with it to find the right combination .. thanks again, Mickey for your great advice!! Have a great holiday!! Tom
Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 Subject: Johnson Metal Body w/ Palm Tree Pattern Hello, We spoke the other day and ya'll sent me the guitar ref'd above. I just wanted to let you know that I received it in perfect condition and I also wanted to let ya'll know...... I LOVE IT!!!!! I really appreciate the great deal, I look forward to our next deal and I am spreading the good news in Memphis about ya'll. Thanks Again James
Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 Mickey, Thanks for the reply. I will be getting back to you about the E-Commerce class once I get all of my thoughts together. I picked up the mandolin on Monday. Thanks for the extra strings! I have another question for you. In your description of the mandolin, you describe it as having a solid carved top and a carved bottom. You didn't list it as solid. Do they make non-solid, carved bottoms (or tops for that matter)? It looks solid to me as the grain appears to go through from the inside to the outside. Anyway, it looks great, plays easily, and sounds pretty good -- I think it needs some playing time to break it in. Thanks for the great service! Everything was handled very promptly and professionally. Matt Hightower
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 Thanks Mickey Your quick response is part of the great service I had read and heard about ,The price is in the ballpark and the guarantee about customer satisfaction I am not going to find any other place. Thanks again see you in a few months.Lanier Mote laniermo@hotmail.com
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 I bought a Fiddle and a Mandolin on the same day. When I got home I found your site. Boy could there be a better day?!!
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 (By the way, from what I have seen, you offer these instruments at by far the best price!) Thanks. Al Mann
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 Subject: Regal RD 75 Hi Mickey, Received my Dobro Monday, man that was quick, opened the box and about died. This Dobro is un-real, a lot more than I expected. The finish is remarkable, the tone and sustain are outrageous. Not being one to buy a Guitar by mail order, you really made it painless. Their were no surprises!! It was a PLEASURE doing business with you. Thanks Again. You'll be hearing from me often. Best Regards, Mike Elmore p.s. Please let me know when you have the correct straps for square necks. Thanks
Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 Dear Mickey: It arrived today. WOW! IS IT BEAUTIFUL!!! Everything else we agreed to also arrived. The sound is great! Now my challange is to play well enough that it is right for me to own such a beautiful instrument. I have quite a way to go there but I'm sure I will enjoy practicing. Thankyou for everything. Best regards, Tom Yohe
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 Hey Folks, Got my Regal Resonator the other day. Thanks for the prompt delivery! You guys even took the time to set it up! It plays great! I saw one in a local music store today but with a different finish then mine. They were asking $175 more than I paid for mine! The hardshell case that I also ordered from you is very nice also. I even had great savings on the case! I would never hesitate to do business with you again (in fact I looking into a new mandolin)! I would recommend you to anyone looking for a great deal on an acoustic instrument! Bill Bjorstad
