Johnson MA-550 Octave Mandolin

This Mandolin's design gives it a better sound and playablility then the traditional Octave Mandolin. It has an extra deep body with big sound and lots of bark. The Mandolin features a warm sunburst finish top. It's back and sides are from highly flamed maple and has a chocolate brown finish. The neck is made from hard maple and the fretboard is rosewood with ivoroid binding and inlaid abalone. The diecast tuning machines with a 16:1 gear ratio.

  • Maple Neck
  • Compensated Bridge

Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 Hey Mickey! What can I say about the Johnson Octave Mandolin (MA-550) that you don't already know? It's everything you told me it would be. The deeper body depth gives it a wonderful resonance and the tone of it is clear and sweet like you said. Great acoustic volume and not overbearing...I love it...it's a close second favorite to my Weber Absaroka O/M. It's real cute to look at, too. But I can't say enough about the tone of this remarkably affordable instrument. Very warm, rosy, with great sustain. The action was perfect! You folks do great set-ups! I love the neck. It is a welcome addition to my instrument family and one that I ain't gonna part with! Thanks again for your advice and instrument savvy! You really do know your stuff! Russ Godfrey

Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2000 I got the Johnson Octave mando on Monday. Mando seems fine. Plays nice with a deep tone as you said.. Using it in a Folk music festival this weekend. Thanks. Jim Honeyman
