Subject: Re: Hammered Dulcimer Problem

I recently have developed a problem with the E-A string on the treble bridge. When I tune the A string side of the bridge, the E side has two different notes: E and F# . No matter what I do to the tuning, such as tuning the E side, then the A side is messed up. The rest of the instrument is ok and doesn't have this problem. Can you suggest what I might do to solve this problem?

Sincerely

Lance

Dear Lance:

I can think of two possible remedies for the tuning problem you're encountering. First: check to make sure the strings are making positive contact with both of the outer bridges (The ones with brass rod.). If not, loosen the string(s) and rewind making sure the windings are below the hole in the tuning peg and closer to the pin block. If this is not the case, try placing your index fingers underneath the E-A string course close to the bridge and lift up. Sometimes the strings become trapped on the plastic bridge caps and lifting up on them equalizes the tension.

Either one of these remedies should solve your problem.

Best regards,

David Marks (Master Luthier for Folkcraft Instruments)
