Subject: Re: Octave Mandola

I had it made made by Dave Freshwater, it's one of his Accord Range Octave Mandola's, scale length 542mm.

Ok ... so what tuning are you currently using? I suspect you're tuning an octave lower than a mandolin right? And, if so, then although it is an Octave Mandola you'll still want to buy learning materials that fall in the range of an Octave Mandolin. Yes, most any mandolin instructional media will help ... since the language is somewhat the same. Nevertheless, your choice of fingering will definitely be different than a mandolin.

Judging by the tunings designated by Freshwater for the 542mm scale length:

Then this would definitely be in an octave tuning.

And, there's a really good advanced book out at (scroll down the page to find the octave one):

Subject: Re: Octave Mandola

Thank, I appreciate your help as I was about to purchase the book /Scales and Arpeggios for mandolin by Joseph Brent.

Kindest regards,

Vincent

Greetings again Vincent ... there aren't isn't that much instructional materials for Octave Mandola (octave tuning) ... hence, you can still learn from Joseph Brent's book ... only adapt it to your longer scale with different fingerings ... and, keep in mind, if you're just beginning, it's very important that you learn proper positioning ... so a personal instructor or a video that teaches good positioning would be in order. Hope this helps, Mickey

Subject: Re: Octave Updates

Hi
I was at an event called the East Coast Music Awards in Saint John, New Brunswick last week and I saw no less than five octave mandolins on the big stages throughout the weekend. All Webers. One was mine but that is a great percentage. We are not alone.

I have a website at <http://www.rikbarron.com>www.rikbarron.com the recordings I have available are kisted there. I nee d to update it though. I should get at it.
Cheers
Rik

Greetings Rik,

Thanks for the positive update on the Octave state of the industry. Sounds promising...I, personally, had hoped we could initiate others' interest with the upcoming book you'll be featured in and the recent Octave video.

I just updated our site to include your link in our "Other Sites of Interest" section. I hope to organize this page into categories soon...

Thanks for staying in touch...Mickey

Mickey

I'm just writing to say hello. I sent some stuff off to you last year for your octave mandolin book but I never heard if you received it. How's the book coming along? I bought your octave mandolin video. It's very good.

Cheers

Rik Barron

Greetings Rik,

Yes, I do have your submissions here in my Octave file...I only have one more book to finish for Mel Bay, a Dobro® Technique book, and then, hopefully, I can finish up the Octave book. You of course will have your own section...be sure to update me on any promotions you'd like printed such as CD availability and website updates...

Hope all is well with you...and hope you're playing your Octave assiduously.

Octavely Yours, Mickey
