Subject: Steps to rectify tuning problems...
Here's my suggestion to see if we can rectify the problems you're currently encountering with your tuning keys:
1. Buy some graphite and put a little under each string directly on the nut...this will ensure that after tuning up to a pitch, there are no pings where a string decides later to change its pitch due to catching slightly at the nut.
2. Be sure to be winding your strings with an under turn and tie over for a solid lock. After locking the string with this thread under and tie over system, then take the slack above the lock, and rapidly work it back and forth until it breaks off. You'll notice that no matter how you rub your finger where the string is tied to the machine shaft, you will not feel any sharpness where the string is broken off whatsoever.
3. Use an electronic tuner and carefully watch the pitch variances after tuning up and playing a couple of songs. It may only be one or two keys that could be causing the problem. In this case, you would only have to supplant the problematic keys. After following step 1 & 2 above, you may determine that there are no further problems utilizing the electronic tuner to assure yourself...
4. Be sure to pull each string individually whenever installing a new set of strings.
5. Make sure to purchase high quality strings with solid windings on the loop ends.
6. Be sure to always wipe your strings clean with Fast Fret or Zenith Almond Stick...I've found this increases the longevity of the strings and enhances tuning ease because the clarity of the string seems to be retained well.
7. I always use 3-in-1 Oil on my tuning gears, only if they're open tuning gears, to ensure that the keys are operating as smooth as possible.
Try all of the above and get back with me...I'd like to know if any of the above suggestions work in your particular case. I'll post this on our FAQ database...
Hope that this somehow helps and allows you to retain the original integrity of your exquisite Absaroka.
Thanks so much for your efforts in composing an Octave Mandolin Video review. I'll be submitting it to a couple of magazines.
