Folk of the Wood Video Sampler Questions

Subject: Is there a way to purchase your recordings?
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 20:52:05 -0400

Greetings Lori,

I've been listening to your recordings (video samplers) as mp3s on the FOTW website--are the
CDs available for purchase?

Thanks for tuning in...and, to date, we haven't released these on CD...however, it has been in the works. We hope to have a video sampler CD session for each individual acoustic instrument by the end of this year. Release dates will be posted on our website.

I am not finding any offered for sale on the
website, but I am hoping that that doesn't mean they aren't there--just that
I'm inept at finding them.

Lovely, lovely music. I have to get a buddy to listen. He's pretty darn
good (teaching my daughter banjo; he plays any stringed thing he picks up,
but I don't think he has an awareness of your stuff).

Thanks so much for your kind words...

Thank you,

Lori Jane Nelson

PS My husband drifts over to my home office door to listen and smile, when
he hears the music as he's stopping off at the coffee machine. Thank
goodness he's clear I won't sound like that! I'm going to have to live to
be eighty if I want to play as long as you have, but the women in my family
run into the nineties, so maybe I will get there.

most of the learning journey is easily accomplished by having a passion for acoustic music...so rest assured, with your passion you've revealed, you're most of the way there...

Keep on Pickin', Mickey

Greetings Glen,

Glad to assist if I can:

I've got 3 wildly different questions to ask - but I figure I'll get them
all out at once:

1) Can you tell me the names of the songs that are being played in the video
samplers for the Deering Goodtime (not the special) and the Gibson RB3 #4?

The Deering Goodtime video sampler: This one was done over 3 years ago...on an analog camera no less. The playing itself was completely improvised...

The Gibson RB3 #4 sampler: Again, a completely improvised piece...however, it is based on the Earl Scruggs' tune "Bugle Call Rag".

Subject: I'm drawing a blank and it's killing me

Greetings Rohn,

Glad to assist...

What is the song you are playing on the Trinity College Octave Mandolin
Video Sampler #2 Flatpicking Version?
http://www.folkofthewood.com/page307.htm

This one is the timeless classic: "Sailor's Hornpipe"...an old-time hornpipe that came to be associated with "Popeye's Theme"...a great scalar exercise in the key of G.

Anyway... thanks for putting the video samplers up. It makes it very nice
to see what the instrument's particulars are (especially when combined
with your awesome photos!)... of course it does too make it more difficult
to choose! :-)

You're most welcome...let me know if you have any further questions on octaves, mandolas or zooks...I'm at your disposal...Mickey

Thanks again,
Rohn

Subject: Joplin Banjo
Date: Fri, 7 Jun 2002 12:58:17 -0500

Hi Mickey
I'm looking for a source for the Joplin rags that you play on your video samplers. I'm wondering if they are in any of the books you carry.  I have Tony Trischka's book with a version of Maple Leaf Rag, but it doesn't sound at all like the one you do on the Golden Era video.

Thanks for your consideration
Larry Dullum

Greetings LARRY,

Glad to assist if I can...

The banjo Joplin arrangements are Fred Sokolow's...And, yes we do carry Fred Sokolow's works through Mel Bay...If you'd like to check out his entire selection, go to: www.melbay.com. Unfortunately, I do not believe the Joplin arangments are listed...however, I will enquire with William Bay about the possibility of getting with Fred Sokolow on a Mel Bay banjo book covering ragtime and other styles.

I've always loved Fred's arrangements...I'm currently working on some of my own now...I've been a ragtime guitarist most of my life and feel banjo coorelates.

Hope the above hleps in some way...

Mickey..

Subject: Banjo Player

Hello,
Who is playing the banjo music on your web site?
He looks like Buddy Blackmon.

Gary

Greetings Gary,

He may look like Buddy...and, if lucky, sometimes sound like Buddy.

The one playing on the videos is none other than Mickey Cochran... a rumor in his own time.

I understand Buddy played with Ween in the '90s...I wonder what he's doing these days.

Anyway, thanks for your enquiry Gary...we wish you the best from all of us at FOTW!

Subject: Song Played By Mickey
Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 10:20:12 -0500

What is the name of the fingerstyle piece played by Mickey in the Beedlove SD-20 movie?
The file name is breedlovesd205.mov.
Thank you
Gilles

Greetings Gilles,

That piece is titled "Doc's Guitar" and is written by Doc Watson. The arrangement is a combination of Doc Watson, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (or at least I think I'm influenced by John McEuen since I've listened to "Dirt, Silver and Gold" a few hundred times), and Marcel Dadi. Be aware, we carry Marcel's books/CDs which offers up this tune along with many other fingerbusters...

For more info on Marcel, check out www.melbay.com They should have a list of his current offerings and a songlist for each book. You can also buy direct from Mel Bay, or, you may also order these books through FOTW. We hope to soon have an entire chapter of our website devoted to fingerstyle guitar...intructional material and info on the many exponents of the style.

Hope the above helps...Mickey

Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 17:24:35 -0500

Hi Mickey:
I am familiar with Marcel's work and own one of the Mel Bay books.
A lot of his tab is also still floating around on the Internet.
I enjoyed your video's.
Thanks
Gilles

Subject: Regal RD-2 Video Sample #6
Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2002 12:03:01 -0500

Hi,

Just a quick question. What is the tune being played on the Regal RD-2 (metal body) Video Sample #6? Do you carry the written music for it?

Thanks,

Ryan Maloney

Greetings Ryan,

Glad to assist...sorry we couldn't back to you quicker. Your e-mail was shuffled back due to our computer inner clocks being off.

The tune being played is called "Dallas Rag"...it's an arrangement by Stefan Grossman. We carry all of Stefan's current titles under our distributor: Mel Bay...if you like this arrangement, you'll want any title related to Ragtime guitar...I started studying Ragtime guitar in high school...and am still completely immersed in the style. I hope to put out a video on beginning Ragtime guitar soon...

Here are some of Stefan Grossman titles we currently represent...you may also order any one of these directly through www.melbay.com:

Stefan Grossman Stefan Grossman has been recording, performing and writing about acoustic fingerstyle guitar techniques and styles for over 30 years. During the period from 1965-1975 he studied and traveled with some of the legendary figures in the history of blues guitar. These included Rev. Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Skip James, Fred MacDowell and Mance Lipscomb. Stefan has authored an entire catalog of fingerpicking guitar books for Mel Bay Publications and has built his own successful video company specializing in figerpicking video lessons and vintage footage of many blues, jazz, country and fingerpicking greats. His videos are issued under the Vestapol, Ramblin' and Stefan Grossman Guitar Workshop labels and are distributed by Mel Bay Publications. Stefan also has recorded numerous guitar solo CD's for Shanachie Records.

Subject: Downloading MOV files of the video samplers
Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 15:02:37 -0500

Bryan/Mickey

First, looking forward to getting the mandola video soon.

Second, very interested in the used Weber Hyalite you have. Hope someone
doesn't grab it in the next week but if you have the chance, of course, sell
it.

I tried to save the MOV files from the website but can't do it without some
real trickery. Bryan's idea didn't work since the QT plugin grabs it first.
The QT settings are supposed to save it in the cache. On my W98/QT4.02
system at home I caught a file in the cache folder and saved it. Later, I
saw some in the cache on a MOV search but they were gone after closing the
browser. QT has the Save As greyed out so it won't work. I also tried
getting in on FTP to the Media folder but it wanted a user name and password
which I don't have. I did finally get one out via email but lost it. I
emailed the page with the MOV file as an attachment to my girlfriend but her
ISP dumped it due to attachment size. If it worked it would still take three
file transfers to get it, in http, out smtp, in pop3, not very efficient.

Bottom line is, how can I get the MOV files for offline viewing. I really
like the Weber mandola ones.

Arctic Ed from girlfriend Joanne's machine.

Greetings Arctic Ed,

Hope all is well with you...

I just wanted to notify you that I am trying to figure out how to create the mandola video samplers as downloadable links on our website. Thanks for hanging tight. By the way, the video samplers on our site are from the one and same mandola you purchased. Lots of body to this one!

So, stay tuned for the downloadable video sampler versions...

Mickey

Hi I was wondering if you can help me.
I would like to download a big chunk of your banjo video samples - I would
like to hear quite a few instruments before I place an order. ftp would be
the easiest solution but I need a login of some sort I have tried guest with
my full email address as a password but it didn't work. I look forward for
any available help and doing business with you.

Best regards

P. Collis

Subject: Fwd: Re: Fwd: What a fantastic site!

Thanks, Mickey. The only recording I have of it is on the Eric Weissburg and
Marshall Brickman collaboration, which I am listening to now.

All power to Folk of the Wood!
Your web site is one of the very best. I have just spent an afternoon
with my banjo listening and playing along to Mickey's banjo video
samplers, and checking out the beautifully presented instrument pics and
information.

One shortcoming, as far as I am concerned, is that most of the tunes
played on the video samples are not identified. In particular, I know
the tune played on Wildwood Heirloom #1 but cannot for the life of me
identify it. I would be grateful if you could help.

best wishes,

J. Avery, South Australia

Greetings John,

Thanks for the kind words regarding our website.

The name of the tune in question is: "Pony Express"

Please get back with me if I can ever assist you further,

Mickey Cochran

Subject: Quick Q

Hi Guys,

I have only a very quick question: what is the Eastern European -sounding
tune that is played in the second sampler video of flatpicking the Kentucky
KM-380S mandolin? Is it anything specific or improvised? It's quite
fantastic!

Dela Lovecraft

Greetings Dela,

I went back to listen to this video sampler myself. You're right in conjecturing the piece as completely improvised. There are quite a few pieces within our video sampler selection that are improvised. I was trying to reveal the instrument's qualities by playing linear lines, chordal chops, and tremolos all within one setting.

Upon listening to this piece outside of its original purpose, I've found it also to have Eastern European overtones. Thanks so much for the kind words and the new perspective.

I have many more video samplers due and will think of this approach more often.

Keep on pickin'...Mickey
