Sept-Oct 2001 Who Am I? A total of 8 clues were given as follows:
Contest Solution 1 Who Am I? Answer: Sam Bush

Clue #1:

In 1952 I first saw the light of Bowling Green.

Clue #2: My favorite fiddler is Tex Logan...especially since contest fiddling was my bag.

Clue #3: I reissued Ben's "Poor Richard's Almanac" instrumentally.

Clue #4: I prefer mandolin over fiddling because "I feel like I have more command of the mandolin. Playing fiddle's like being on a surfboard that's coming out from under you."

Clue #5: The "Almanac" line-up was the precursor to the "Alliance" which was the precursor to the "Revival".

Clue #6: Mickey took pictures of my performance in July, 2001—find the "Nashville Pictorial Journey".

Clue #7: I won the Reader's Poll of Frets 3 times in a row as "Best Mandolinist".

Clue #8: I've now have my very own signature model made by Gibson.

"Sam Bush was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on April 13, 1952. Before he was a teen, he was motivated toward music by his father. At eleven years old, he bought his first mandolin and two years later got a fiddle. While growing up, he was influenced by Byron Berline, Tommy jackson and "Texas Shorty" (Jim Chancellor) on the fiddle, and Red Rector and Hank Garland on the mandolin. ...Later in his career he said that he prefers playing mandolin over the fiddle. 'I feel like I have more command of the mandolin. Playing fiddle's like being on a surfboard that's coming out from under you.' ...Alan Munde, Wayne Stewart and Sam Bush recorded a tape in 1969 which became 'Poor Richard's Almanac.' Often acknowledged as a precursor to newgrass music, the tape of the recording was made in Stewart's grandmother's living room on a home tape machine. They hung her quilts around the room to deaden the sound. The album was released in 1969 on american Heritage."

Excerpt from America's Music Bluegrass by Barry R. Willis "A history of bluegrass music in the words of its pioneers...631 pages!...available through Folk of the Wood...Retails: 49.95

Mickey's Notes: Above is only a small sampling of bio info on Bush available in the America's Music Bluegrass by Barry R. Wills. Sam Bush was a major influence and a true acoustic inspiration for me. I had the honor of seeing him play solo at the Gibson Showcase in Nashville, Summer of 2001. He played solo mandolin that was nothing short of mind boggling. Who else can get on stage with one mandolin and entertain? I wanted so bad to meet him in person and unfortunately, the opportunity never arose. Maybe someday.
