Dear FOTW,

I received my new Johnson MA-120N mandolin yesterday. I am on OK guitar
player, but have never previously played mandolin. Let me say that I am
thrilled! It was packaged securely and is in excellent condition. It
looks great, though I should mention that I don't care for pickguards, so
I took that off right away. Now it looks even better!

It is set up well and plays very easily. I took out a mandolin chord
chart, tuned it up, and was immediately strumming tunes! Sure, I know
there are a lot higher quality instruments (It ain't no Gibson or
Collings), but it is perfect for me. My untrained ears probably couldn't
tell any difference anyway. I highly recommend this mandolin for
beginners (and probably even intermediate level players)!

If I stick with it, I will undoubtedly be looking for a higher quality
instrument in the future. However, I think I will always keep this one
and pass it down to my kids if they ever become interested.

Thanks to Tradd and everyone else at FOTW for a very pleasant buying
experience. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely, Jerry D. Hyer

Dear Folk,

Thanks very much for my Johnson MA-120N mandolin,
which arrived today. I'm amazed how good it sounds for
such an inexpensive instrument. Your video sampler's
sound was quite accurate.

I've compared the Johnson with my handmade F-style.
The F's tone is a bit more focused, but the Johnson is
its equal in sweetness and volume. It's a joy to
play---and a great value!

You packed the mandolin very well. I was a bit
surprised, though, to find you'd shipped it tuned up.
I'd always heard it was better to loosen strings to
take the tension off of the instrument during transit.
Is that not true?

Cheers,
Andy Fielding

Greetings Andy,

Thanks for the positive update...be aware, we would not be able to set up your mandolin without having the strings up to full tension...and if the strings would have been loosened before shipping, the bridge would have moved and your intonation would have been off. There are many builders, such as Rigel and Weber, that ship their mandolin with full tension too...

Let us know how else we might assist...Mickey
