Contest Solution 1 Who Am I? Answer: Doc Watson Clue #1: I was first discovered by Ralph Rinzler in the deep back woods of Deep Gap, NC in 1960 at 37 years of age. Clue #2: I have a penchant for Gallagher guitars. Clue #3: I've got the "Deep River Blues". Clue #4: I was "Way Downtown" on the "Tennessee Stud" riding through the "Black Mountains". Clue #5: I named my son after Merle Travis. Clue #6: My flatpicking and fingerpicking is considered equally proficient. Clue #7: Although I'm not a physician, many still refer to me as such. Clue #8: I was greatly influenced by both Merle and Chet. "In the legends of flatpicked guitar music, few stand more prominent in its roots than Doc Watson. He didn't break new ground when he picked a fiddle tune on the guitar; credit for being the first is generally given to Don Reno and the pickers with the Stanly Brothers: George Shuffler and Bill Napier. But Doc was different. First, because his playing was so dominant as to demand attention, and second, because he made the guitar the lead instrument of the band--not just another lead instrument. He opened the way for a new generation of flapickers in bluegrass music who are today represented by Dan Crary, Clarence White, Tony Rice, Norman Blake, and many others."
