"Intro to the Dobro" Part II Video of a 2-Part Series
by Mickey Cochran

Here's Part II of a fully comprehensive introduction to the squareneck Dobro. These videos will give you a step-by-step approach to learning the Dobro through very simple exercises. The series starts off, in Part I, with an overview by revealing the background of the Dobro, the body and wood choices available and proper set-up of your Dobro. It moves into many other areas of study that lays a solid foundation for becoming an accomplished dobroist.

Eight chapters in all covering the following and then some:

Overview

Part II's objective is to offer more exercises to further establish a solid technique...after studying Part I, and learning the fundamentals of a solid Dobro foundation, Part II focuses even more on technique development through Scales and Chords...and how to combine them. Many more traditional techniques are also covered such as "Dobro Accents", "The Bluegrass Approach", and even how to get your Dobro to sound like a banjo. One of the more interesting aspects of Part II in this series, is the instruction on how to play Dobro unaccompanied...in other words, how to add your very own bass lines to melodies you learn so that you're better able to play by yourself. Alternating bass and monotonic bass reveals the Dobro as a powerful solo instrument without any need of other back-up instruments.

Tuning & Tools

Tuning is covered thoroughly in Part I of this series. In Part II, other tools covered include the Dobro capo...How to utilize a Dobro capo and why it would be considered an indispensable tool for the complete dobroist. The value and use of the Dobro capo is also demonstrated within a song context.

A Methodology

Part II focuses on even more building blocks and exercises going beyond Part I's fundamentals of Dobro. To further develop technique, you'll learn many more exercises for both left and right hands. all of these practical exercises can be applied directly to most any song you'll ever attempt to play on the Dobro. Part II exercises include many essential barring techniques: the forward slant, the backward slant, the trill, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and even bends. This covers the gamut of what you'll need to know to be a completely versed professional dobroist.

A Songbook

Additionally, Part II introduces five more songs to reinforce the exercises and studies illustrated throughout this series:
1. "Cripple Creek"
2. "House of New Orleans"
3. "Red Haired Boy"
4. "John Henry"
5. "Freight Train"
6. "Greensleeves"

Two other original pieces are introduced demonstrating the techniques established throughout the video:
1. "Hobo Dobro"
2. "It's Cloudy in the Mountains"

One of the most revealing segments within this video is "New Dimensions in Dobro Playing" which illuminates how you can approach your Dobro for solo playing without accompaniment by adding bass lines while playing melodies.

Additionally, you will learn about some of the more common approaches to the Dobro such as melodic style, single string style, banjo style, blues style and alternating bass techniques for solo Dobro.

Hey Mickey,

Greetings Dave,

Just a quick note to let you know I got the Gold Tone/Paul Beard dobro on Friday. I opened the box *at the post office* talk about feeling like a kid at Christmas ! I was unable to play with it until today as we had company here and I wanted to spend some time with this instrument.. Well, today I was finally able to take it out of the case. First thing you notice is the magnificent workmanship on this guitar. Excellent craftsmanship. Outstanding finish. What a beautiful instrument to see touch and hold. I was *almost* afraid to take it out of the case (which is very nice as well).

Well, I took it out of the case and watched your video - just the first lesson up to the roll's, and found it to be very informational, it's like having a teacher there in the room with you. Only this teacher has a rewind button! I want to learn Dobro one step at a time. I also went to the FOTW website to print out the accompanying tablature, so I can get a better understanding of what each finger is doing....

In closing let me say that the people of Folk Of The Wood and this guitar have far exceeded my expectations.

Thanks to you and all of the folks at FOTW!

Dave McCrostie

Subject: Re: Your Instructional Dobro Tape

Hi Mickey, Just wanted to say thanks for your Dobro tape. I got some great tips on the rolls - forward , reverse etc. I'm not quite through but I should be by today. I always like the split screen for fingers and frets. Nice camera work and good sound. Plus you are a good presenter. Marguerite says a very nice energy portryed on the screen.

Thanks Again, Chuck WIlson
